In 1888 patenteerde Miriam Benjamin haar Gong and Signal Chair, een stoel met een knop die een bediende kon oproepen zonder te schreeuwen, die later werd aangenomen door het Amerikaanse Huis van Afgevaardigden en haar de tweede Zwarte vrouw maakte die een Amerikaans patent bezat.
