Mytoori uses on-device Piper voices so sentences sound natural even when you are offline. Follow these steps any time you open a story:
- Select a voice that matches your learning language. We remember your pick per language.
- Tap the play icon in any sentence panel. We queue the download and highlight each word in sync.
- Re-play instantly. Recently generated clips stay cached per voice and sentence.
Choose the right voice
When you tap the small settings button next to play, Mytoori lists the best available Piper voices for the story's language. Voices that require a decision, such as Brazilian Portuguese, open the dialog automatically the first time so you can pick the accent you prefer.
Your choice is stored securely on your device. Switching stories or logging back in later reuses the same voice, so you always hear a familiar accent without setting it up again.
Smart safeguards
- We only download Piper voices when you ask for playback, keeping initial page loads fast.
- Downloads show a live percentage so you know when the model is ready.
- If storage is tight, the cache clears automatically when you reload the page.
Playback that adapts to you
After you press play, we generate audio for just that sentence. A subtle message under the controls keeps you informed – from loading the Piper model, to rendering speech, to confirming when the clip is ready to replay.
Every clip is cached per sentence and voice. If you repeat a sentence, it plays back instantly without re-downloading or regenerating audio. We also respect browser autoplay rules, so if audio is muted by the browser you can simply tap play again to continue.
Need to pause? Use your keyboard or tap the sentence again. The hidden audio element is accessible to screen readers, and we announce progress updates through polite live regions so the interface stays inclusive.
Word highlighting stays in sync
As audio plays, each word lights up in sequence. This makes it easier to follow along when you are practicing pronunciation or shadowing the narrator. If you jump to a new sentence, we wipe the highlight and wait for the next clip so you always start fresh.
- Keyboard control works too — press Space to toggle playback once the audio element is focused.
- If you pause midway, the highlighted word stays pinned so you can reread before resuming.
- Translation toggles are independent of audio. Feel free to listen while viewing either language.
Troubleshooting audio
If you do not hear anything, double-check that a voice is selected and that your browser allows audio playback. When a download stalls, toggle the voice dialog or refresh the page — we will restart the Piper session automatically.
