Há muito tempo, o céu estava muito próximo da terra.

Long ago, the sky was very close to the earth.

As pessoas podiam erguer as mãos e tocá-lo.

People could reach up and touch it with their hands.

O céu estava macio e branco como algodão.

The sky was soft and white like cotton.

Quando as pessoas estavam com fome, elas estendiam as mãos para cima e arrancavam pedaços do céu para comer.

When people were hungry, they would reach up and take pieces of the sky to eat.

O céu tinha um sabor doce e bom.

The sky tasted sweet and good.

Era como pão e mel juntos.

It was like bread and honey together.

O Espírito do Céu ficou feliz em alimentar o povo.

The Sky Spirit was happy to feed the people.

Mas o Espírito do Céu tinha uma regra.

But the Sky Spirit had one rule.

"Pegue apenas o que precisar,"

"Take only what you need,"

disse o Espírito do Céu.

said the Sky Spirit.

"Não desperdicem o meu dom."

"Do not waste my gift."

Por muitos anos, as pessoas seguiram esta regra.

For many years, people followed this rule.

Eles pegavam apenas pequenos pedaços quando estavam com fome.

They took only small pieces when they were hungry.

Eles nunca desperdiçaram o céu.

They never wasted the sky.

Mas com o passar do tempo, as pessoas se tornaram gananciosas.

But as time passed, people became greedy.

Elas pegavam grandes pedaços de céu mesmo quando não estavam com fome.

They took big pieces of sky even when they were not hungry.

Eles pegaram cada vez mais.

They took more and more.

Eles não conseguiam comer tudo.

They could not eat it all.

Os pedaços restantes do céu foram jogados fora.

The leftover pieces of sky were thrown away.

Foram deixados no chão para apodrecer.

They were left on the ground to rot.

Isso deixou o Espírito do Céu muito triste e zangado.

This made the Sky Spirit very sad and angry.

Um dia, uma velha mulher tomou um enorme pedaço de céu.

One day, an old woman took a huge piece of sky.

Era muito maior do que ela precisava.

It was much bigger than she needed.

Ela comeu um pouco, mas não conseguiu terminar tudo.

She ate a little bit, but she could not finish it all.

Ela tentou esconder o céu que sobrou atrás de sua casa.

She tried to hide the leftover sky behind her house.

Mas o Espírito do Céu via tudo.

But the Sky Spirit saw everything.

O Espírito do Céu ficou muito perturbado.

The Sky Spirit was very upset.

"Eu te disse para pegar apenas o que precisas,"

"I told you to take only what you need,"

disse o Espírito do Céu.

said the Sky Spirit.

"Mas vocês são gananciosos e perdulários."

"But you are greedy and wasteful."

"Tu não me escutas."

"You do not listen to me."

O Espírito do Céu começou a se afastar da terra.

The Sky Spirit began to move away from the earth.

Mais e mais alto o céu se elevou.

Higher and higher the sky went.

As pessoas estenderam as mãos para o alto, mas não conseguiam mais tocar o céu.

The people reached up with their hands, but they could not touch the sky anymore.

"Por favor, voltem!"

"Please come back!"

gritou o povo.

cried the people.

"Pedimos desculpa!"

"We are sorry!"

"Não seremos mais gananciosos!"

"We will not be greedy anymore!"

Mas era tarde demais.

But it was too late.

O Espírito do Céu se afastou para muito, muito longe.

The Sky Spirit moved far, far away.

O céu tornou-se azul e distante.

The sky became blue and distant.

A partir daquele dia, as pessoas não puderam mais comer pedaços de céu.

From that day on, people could no longer eat pieces of sky.

Eles tiveram que trabalhar arduamente para cultivar alimentos da terra.

They had to work hard to grow food from the ground.

Eles tinham que plantar sementes e cuidar das plantações.

They had to plant seeds and take care of crops.

O céu permaneceu distante para lembrar as pessoas de não serem gananciosas.

The sky stayed far away to remind people not to be greedy.

Ela nos lembra de usar apenas o que precisamos e de não desperdiçar as coisas boas.

It reminds us to use only what we need and not to waste good things.
