Perché il Cielo è Lontano

Molto tempo fa, il cielo era molto vicino alla terra.

Long ago, the sky was very close to the earth.

Le persone potevano allungarsi e toccarlo con le loro mani.

People could reach up and touch it with their hands.

Il cielo era soffice e bianco come il cotone.

The sky was soft and white like cotton.

Quando le persone avevano fame, si alzavano in punta di piedi e prendevano pezzi di cielo da mangiare.

When people were hungry, they would reach up and take pieces of the sky to eat.

Il cielo aveva un sapore dolce e buono.

The sky tasted sweet and good.

Era come pane e miele insieme.

It was like bread and honey together.

Lo Spirito del Cielo era felice di nutrire la gente.

The Sky Spirit was happy to feed the people.

Ma lo Spirito del Cielo aveva una regola.

But the Sky Spirit had one rule.

"Prendi solo quello che ti serve,"

"Take only what you need,"

disse lo Spirito del Cielo.

said the Sky Spirit.

"Non sprecare il mio dono."

"Do not waste my gift."

Per molti anni, le persone hanno seguito questa regola.

For many years, people followed this rule.

Prendevano solo piccoli pezzi quando avevano fame.

They took only small pieces when they were hungry.

Non hanno mai sprecato il cielo.

They never wasted the sky.

Ma col passare del tempo, le persone diventarono avide.

But as time passed, people became greedy.

Presero grandi pezzi di cielo anche quando non avevano fame.

They took big pieces of sky even when they were not hungry.

Hanno preso sempre di più.

They took more and more.

Non riuscivano a mangiarlo tutto.

They could not eat it all.

I pezzi di cielo rimasti furono buttati via.

The leftover pieces of sky were thrown away.

Furono lasciati a terra a marcire.

They were left on the ground to rot.

Questo rese lo Spirito del Cielo molto triste e arrabbiato.

This made the Sky Spirit very sad and angry.

Un giorno, una vecchia donna prese un enorme pezzo di cielo.

One day, an old woman took a huge piece of sky.

Era molto più grande di quanto le servisse.

It was much bigger than she needed.

Lei mangiò un pochino, ma non riuscì a finire tutto.

She ate a little bit, but she could not finish it all.

Ha cercato di nascondere il cielo rimasto dietro casa sua.

She tried to hide the leftover sky behind her house.

Ma lo Spirito del Cielo vide tutto.

But the Sky Spirit saw everything.

Lo Spirito del Cielo era molto turbato.

The Sky Spirit was very upset.

"I told you to take only what you need,"

"Ti avevo detto di prendere solo quello che ti serve,"

said the Sky Spirit.

"Ma sei avido e sprecone."

"But you are greedy and wasteful."

"Non mi ascolti."

"You do not listen to me."

Lo Spirito del Cielo iniziò ad allontanarsi dalla terra.

The Sky Spirit began to move away from the earth.

Sempre più in alto andò il cielo.

Higher and higher the sky went.

Le persone alzarono le mani, ma non potevano più toccare il cielo.

The people reached up with their hands, but they could not touch the sky anymore.

"Per favore torna!"

"Please come back!"

gridò la gente.

cried the people.

"Ci dispiace!"

"We are sorry!"

"Non saremo più avidi!"

"We will not be greedy anymore!"

Ma era troppo tardi.

But it was too late.

Lo Spirito del Cielo si allontanò molto, molto lontano.

The Sky Spirit moved far, far away.

Il cielo diventò blu e distante.

The sky became blue and distant.

Da quel giorno, le persone non poterono più mangiare pezzi di cielo.

From that day on, people could no longer eat pieces of sky.

Dovettero lavorare duramente per coltivare cibo dalla terra.

They had to work hard to grow food from the ground.

Dovettero piantare semi e prendersi cura dei raccolti.

They had to plant seeds and take care of crops.

Il cielo rimase lontano per ricordare alle persone di non essere avide.

The sky stayed far away to remind people not to be greedy.

Ci ricorda di usare solo quello di cui abbiamo bisogno e di non sprecare le cose buone.

It reminds us to use only what we need and not to waste good things.
