The Donkey Carrying the Image
Um burro carrega uma estátua preciosa pela cidade e percebe que as pessoas se curvam respeitosamente quando ele passa. Ele começa a se sentir muito orgulhoso e importante, sem perceber o verdadeiro motivo do respeito delas.
Um burro carregava uma estátua de um deus nas costas.
A donkey was carrying a statue of a god on his back.
A estátua era feita de ouro e era muito bela.
The statue was made of gold and was very beautiful.
As pessoas na estrada viram a estátua e se curvaram para rezar.
People on the road saw the statue and bowed down to pray.
O burro pensou que as pessoas estavam se curvando para ele.
The donkey thought the people were bowing to him.
Ele se sentiu muito orgulhoso e importante.
He felt very proud and important.
"Olhem para mim!"
"Look at me!"
pensou ele.
he thought.
"Todos me amam."
"Everyone loves me."
"Eu sou tão especial!"
"I am so special!"
O burro começou a caminhar lentamente.
The donkey started to walk slowly.
Ele queria que todos o vissem melhor.
He wanted everyone to see him better.
Ele ergueu a cabeça bem alto e se sentiu como um rei.
He held his head high and felt like a king.
Mas então o dono do burro tirou a estátua de suas costas.
But then the donkey's owner took the statue off his back.
As pessoas pararam de se curvar.
The people stopped bowing.
Eles se afastaram sem olhar para o burro.
They walked away without looking at the donkey.
O burro ficou confuso.
The donkey was confused.
"Por que pararam?"
"Why did they stop?"
ele se perguntou.
he wondered.
"Para onde foram todos?"
"Where did everyone go?"
Um cavalo velho viu o que aconteceu.
An old horse saw what happened.
O cavalo disse ao burro,
The horse said to the donkey,
"Meu amigo, o povo não estava se curvando para você."
"My friend, the people were not bowing to you."
"Eles estavam se curvando à estátua que você carregava."
"They were bowing to the statue you were carrying."
"Você estava apenas ajudando a carregá-la."
"You were just helping to carry it."
O burro se sentiu tolo.
The donkey felt silly.
Ele aprendeu que não era especial por causa do que estava carregando.
He learned that he was not special because of what he was carrying.
O elogio pertencia à estátua, não a ele.
The praise belonged to the statue, not to him.
