A Maya le encantaba mirar las estrellas.
Maya loved to look at the stars.
Todas las noches, se sentaba en su azotea con su viejo telescopio.
Every night, she sat on her roof with her old telescope.
Vivía en un pueblo pequeño donde el cielo era oscuro y despejado.
She lived in a small town where the sky was dark and clear.
Las estrellas parecían pequeños diamantes.
The stars looked like tiny diamonds.
Una noche de martes, Maya vio algo extraño.
One Tuesday night, Maya saw something strange.
Una luz brillante se movió a través del cielo.
A bright light moved across the sky.
No era un avión.
It was not a plane.
Los aviones tienen luces intermitentes y hacen ruido.
Planes have blinking lights and make noise.
Esta luz era silenciosa y muy rápida.
This light was silent and very fast.
¡Mamá, ven rápido!
"Mom, come quick!"
gritó Maya.
Maya called.
Su madre se subió al tejado.
Her mother climbed onto the roof.

"What is it, Maya?"
¡Mira!
"Look!
Esa luz se está moviendo en círculo.
That light is moving in a circle.
Los aviones no pueden hacer eso.
Planes cannot do that."
Observaron juntos.
They watched together.
La luz dejó de moverse.
The light stopped moving.
Entonces subió y bajó muy rápido.
Then it went up and down very fast.
Entonces desapareció.
Then it disappeared.
"Eso fue inusual," dijo la madre de Maya.
"That was unusual," said Maya's mother.
"Tal vez era un helicóptero."
"Maybe it was a helicopter."
Pero Maya sabía que no era un helicóptero.
But Maya knew it was not a helicopter.
Los helicópteros son ruidosos y lentos.
Helicopters are loud and slow.
Al día siguiente en la escuela, Maya le contó a su amigo Tom sobre la extraña luz.
The next day at school, Maya told her friend Tom about the strange light.

"I saw something too!"
—dijo Tom.
said Tom.

"Last week, I was fishing with my dad at the lake.
Vimos tres luces naranjas en forma de triángulo.
We saw three orange lights in a triangle shape.

They flew over the water without making any sound."
Maya estaba emocionada.
Maya was excited.

"Did you take a picture?"

"Yes!

It looks like a flying dinner plate," said Maya.

The disk stopped above the playground.

It made a soft humming sound, like a refrigerator.

Then a bright white light came down from the bottom of the disk.

Maya looked through her telescope.

She could see the disk very clearly.

There were no windows.

The disk spun around three times very fast.

Then it shot up into the sky and vanished among the stars.
Maya y Tom permanecieron sentados en silencio durante mucho tiempo.
Maya and Tom sat quietly for a long time.
¿Qué crees que era?
"What do you think it was?"
preguntó Tom.
asked Tom.
—Creo que era un ovni —dijo Maya.
"I think it was a UFO," said Maya.
OVNI significa Objeto Volador No Identificado.
"UFO means Unidentified Flying Object.
Nadie sabe qué son o de dónde vienen.
Nobody knows what they are or where they come from."
¿Crees que había extraterrestres adentro?
"Do you think there were aliens inside?"
—Tal vez —dijo Maya.
"Maybe," said Maya.
O tal vez era un avión secreto del gobierno.
"Or maybe it was a secret airplane from the government.
O tal vez era algo completamente diferente.
Or maybe it was something else completely different."
Tom asintió.
Tom nodded.
¿Deberíamos decírselo a alguien?
"Should we tell someone?"
Maya lo pensó.
Maya thought about this.
¿Quién nos creería?
"Who would believe us?
Los adultos siempre dicen que tenemos mucha imaginación.
Adults always say we have big imaginations."
Decidieron seguir observando el cielo.
They decided to keep watching the sky.
Tal vez volverían a ver el disco misterioso.
Maybe they would see the mysterious disk again.
Tal vez descubrirían su secreto.
Maybe they would learn its secret.
A partir de esa noche, Maya y Tom se convirtieron en observadores del cielo.
From that night on, Maya and Tom became sky watchers.
Vieron muchas cosas extrañas: luces que danzaban, objetos que cambiaban de forma y cosas voladoras que se movían demasiado rápido para ser máquinas terrestres.
They saw many strange things - lights that danced, objects that changed shape, and flying things that moved too fast for earthly machines.
El misterio continuó, y también su amistad.
The mystery continued, and so did their friendship.
