The Donkey Carrying the Image
Un âne porte une statue précieuse à travers la ville et remarque que les gens s'inclinent respectueusement sur son passage. Il commence à se sentir très fier et important, sans réaliser la vraie raison de leur respect.
Un âne portait sur son dos la statue d'un dieu.
A donkey was carrying a statue of a god on his back.
La statue était faite d'or et était très belle.
The statue was made of gold and was very beautiful.
Les gens sur la route virent la statue et s'inclinèrent pour prier.
People on the road saw the statue and bowed down to pray.
L'âne crut que les gens se prosternaient devant lui.
The donkey thought the people were bowing to him.
Il se sentait très fier et important.
He felt very proud and important.
Regardez-moi !
"Look at me!"
pensa-t-il.
he thought.
« Tout le monde m'aime. »
"Everyone loves me."
Je suis si spécial !
"I am so special!"
L'âne se mit à marcher lentement.
The donkey started to walk slowly.
Il voulait que tout le monde le voie mieux.
He wanted everyone to see him better.
Il tenait la tête haute et se sentait comme un roi.
He held his head high and felt like a king.
Mais alors le propriétaire de l'âne retira la statue de son dos.
But then the donkey's owner took the statue off his back.
Les gens cessèrent de s'incliner.
The people stopped bowing.
Ils s'éloignèrent sans regarder l'âne.
They walked away without looking at the donkey.
L'âne était perplexe.
The donkey was confused.
« Pourquoi se sont-ils arrêtés ? »
"Why did they stop?"
se demanda-t-il.
he wondered.
« Où sont-ils tous partis ? »
"Where did everyone go?"
Un vieux cheval vit ce qui s'était passé.
An old horse saw what happened.
Le cheval dit à l'âne,
The horse said to the donkey,
« Mon ami, les gens ne se prosternaient pas devant toi. »
"My friend, the people were not bowing to you."
"Ils se prosternaient devant la statue que tu portais."
"They were bowing to the statue you were carrying."
Tu ne faisais que l'aider à la porter.
"You were just helping to carry it."
L'âne se sentit bête.
The donkey felt silly.
Il apprit qu'il n'était pas spécial à cause de ce qu'il portait.
He learned that he was not special because of what he was carrying.
Les éloges revenaient à la statue, non pas à lui.
The praise belonged to the statue, not to him.
