Les Trois Plumes
Le vieux roi avait trois fils.
The old king had three sons.
Il était très malade et devait choisir le prochain roi.
He was very sick and needed to pick the next king.
Mais quel fils ?
But which son?
« Je vais te donner une épreuve »,
"I will give you a test,"
dit le roi.
said the king.
« Trouvez-moi le plus beau tapis du monde. »
"Find me the most beautiful carpet in the world."
"Le vainqueur sera roi."
"The winner will be king."
Le roi souffla trois plumes dans les airs.
The king blew three feathers into the air.
« Suivez votre plume, »
"Follow your feather,"
dit-il.
he said.
La première plume s'envola vers l'est.
The first feather flew east.
La seconde plume s'envola vers l'ouest.
The second feather flew west.
La troisième plume tomba là, tout près.
The third feather fell down right there.
Le premier fils rit.
The first son laughed.
« Je trouverai le plus beau tapis dans la grande ville ! »
"I will find the best carpet in the big city!"
Le deuxième fils sourit.
The second son smiled.
« Je trouverai le plus beau tapis par-delà l'océan ! »
"I will find the best carpet across the ocean!"
Le troisième fils avait l'air triste.
The third son looked sad.
Sa plume venait de tomber.
His feather just fell down.
"Il faut que je regarde ici,"
"I must look here,"
dit-il.
he said.
Les frères aînés partirent au loin.
The older brothers went far away.
Ils achetèrent des tapis bon marché et revinrent rapidement.
They bought cheap carpets and came back quickly.
Le fils cadet regarda autour de lui.
The youngest son looked around.
Il trouva une grosse pierre avec une porte.
He found a big stone with a door.
Il l'ouvrit et descendit, descendit, descendit.
He opened it and went down, down, down.
Au fond, il trouva une belle grenouille portant une couronne.
At the bottom, he found a beautiful frog wearing a crown.
« Bonjour, prince, »
"Hello, prince,"
dit la grenouille.
said the frog.
« Qu'avez-vous besoin ? »
"What do you need?"
« J'ai besoin du plus beau tapis du monde, »
"I need the most beautiful carpet in the world,"
dit-il.
he said.
La grenouille frappa des mains.
The frog clapped her hands.
Une petite grenouille apporta une petite boîte.
A tiny frog brought a small box.
À l'intérieur se trouvait le plus beau tapis jamais créé.
Inside was the most beautiful carpet ever made.
Il était doux comme les nuages et brillant comme les étoiles.
It was soft like clouds and bright like stars.

dit le prince.

Il retourna auprès de son père.
He went back to his father.
Les trois fils montrèrent leurs tapis.
The three sons showed their carpets.
Le père toucha le premier tapis.
The father touched the first carpet.
« C'est acceptable. »
"This is okay."
Il toucha le second tapis.
He touched the second carpet.
Celui-ci convient aussi.
"This is okay too."
Il toucha le troisième tapis.
He touched the third carpet.
Oh là là !
"Oh my!"
« C'est parfait ! »
"This is perfect!"
« Mais j'ai besoin d'un dernier test. »
"But I need one more test."
Le roi souffla de nouveau trois plumes.
The king blew three feathers again.
« Apportez-moi la plus belle bague. »
"Bring me the most beautiful ring."
Une fois de plus, les frères aînés partirent au loin.
Again, the older brothers went far away.
Le plus jeune fils retourna vers la grenouille.
The youngest son went back to the frog.
La grenouille lui donna une bague qui scintillait comme le soleil.
The frog gave him a ring that sparkled like the sun.
Le roi aimait la bague.
The king loved the ring.
« Un dernier test, »
"One last test,"
dit-il.
he said.
« Amenez-moi la plus belle femme pour qu'elle soit reine. »
"Bring me the most beautiful woman to be queen."
Les frères suivirent à nouveau leurs plumes.
The brothers followed their feathers again.
Le plus jeune fils retourna vers la grenouille.
The youngest son went back to the frog.
« Je viendrai avec toi »,
"I will come with you,"
dit la grenouille.
said the frog.
« Mais tu dois d'abord m'embrasser. »
"But you must kiss me first."
Le prince était bon.
The prince was kind.
Il embrassa la grenouille.
He kissed the frog.
POUF !
POOF!
La grenouille devint la plus belle princesse du monde !
The frog became the most beautiful princess in the world!
Ils allèrent ensemble chez le roi.
They went to the king together.
Le roi était si heureux.
The king was so happy.

"You win!"
dit le roi.
said the king.
« Tu seras roi, et elle sera reine ! »
"You will be king, and she will be queen!"
Le prince bienveillant devint roi et vécut heureux pour toujours avec sa princesse grenouille.
The kind prince became king and lived happily ever after with his frog princess.
