The Frogs Who Desired a King
Un groupe de grenouilles vivant paisiblement dans un étang décident qu'elles veulent un roi pour les gouverner. Elles demandent aux dieux de leur envoyer un dirigeant, mais elles risquent de ne pas aimer ce qu'elles vont recevoir.
Il y a longtemps, de nombreuses grenouilles vivaient dans un grand étang.
Long ago, many frogs lived in a big pond.
Elles étaient heureuses et libres.
They were happy and free.
Personne ne leur disait quoi faire. Un jour, les grenouilles se parlèrent entre elles.
No one told them what to do. One day, the frogs talked together.
« Il nous faut un roi »,
"We need a king,"
dirent-ils.
they said.
« Tous les animaux devraient avoir un roi pour les gouverner. »
"All animals should have a king to rule them."
Les grenouilles demandèrent aux dieux un roi.
The frogs asked the gods for a king.
« Donnez-nous un roi, s'il vous plaît ! »
"Please give us a king!"
dirent-ils.
they said.
« Nous voulons quelqu'un pour nous diriger ! »
"We want someone to lead us!"
Les dieux entendirent les grenouilles.
The gods heard the frogs.
Ils jetèrent une grosse bûche dans l'étang.
They threw a big log into the pond.
PLOUF !
SPLASH!
La bûche fit un bruit retentissant.
The log made a loud noise.
Les grenouilles furent effrayées.
The frogs were scared.
Elles se cachèrent sous l'eau.
They hid under the water.
Notre roi est ici !
"Our king is here!"
chuchotèrent-ils.
they whispered.
« Il est si puissant ! »
"He is so powerful!"
Mais au bout de quelque temps, les grenouilles sortirent.
But after some time, the frogs came out.
Elles regardèrent la bûche.
They looked at the log.
Il ne bougeait pas.
It did not move.
Il ne parlait pas.
It did not speak.
Il flottait simplement sur l'eau.
It just floated on the water.
Les grenouilles prirent courage.
The frogs became brave.
Elles sautèrent sur la bûche.
They jumped on the log.
Ils s'assirent dessus.
They sat on it.
Ils jouaient autour de lui.
They played around it.
« Ce roi ne fait rien »,
"This king does nothing,"
disaient-ils.
they said.
« Il est ennuyeux ! »
"He is boring!"
Les grenouilles allèrent de nouveau vers les dieux.
The frogs went to the gods again.
Nous voulons un nouveau roi !
"We want a new king!"
dirent-ils.
they said.
« Donnez-nous un vrai roi ! »
"Give us a real king!"
« Donnez-nous un roi fort ! »
"Give us a strong king!"
Les dieux étaient en colère.
The gods were angry.
Cette fois, ils envoyèrent une grande cigogne à l'étang.
This time, they sent a big stork to the pond.
La cigogne était grande et forte.
The stork was tall and strong.
Les grenouilles furent heureuses au début.
The frogs were happy at first.
« Regardez notre nouveau roi ! »
"Look at our new king!"
dirent-ils.
they said.
« Il est si grand et si beau ! »
"He is so big and beautiful!"
Mais la cigogne avait faim.
But the stork was hungry.
Il se mit à manger les grenouilles.
He began to eat the frogs.
Une à une, il les attrapa avec son long bec.
One by one, he caught them with his long beak.
Les grenouilles étaient très effrayées.
The frogs were very scared.
Elles coururent se cacher.
They ran and hid.
Aidez-nous !
"Help us!"
crièrent-ils aux dieux.
they cried to the gods.
"Notre roi nous dévore !"
"Our king is eating us!"
Mais les dieux dirent,
But the gods said,
« Vous avez demandé un roi. »
"You asked for a king."
Maintenant vous en avez un.
"Now you have one."
Tu dois le garder.
"You must keep him."
Les grenouilles apprirent qu'il vaut parfois mieux être libre que d'avoir un mauvais souverain.
The frogs learned that sometimes it is better to be free than to have a bad ruler.
