A man came to the forest with an old, broken axe.

Il ne pouvait abattre aucun arbre avec celle-ci. L'homme demanda de l'aide aux arbres.

He could not cut any trees with it. The man asked the trees for help.

« Veuillez me donner un petit morceau de bois, »

"Please give me a small piece of wood,"

dit-il.

he said.

« J'ai besoin de fabriquer un nouveau manche pour ma hache. »

"I need to make a new handle for my axe."

Les arbres eurent pitié de l'homme.

The trees felt sorry for the man.

Ils se concertèrent et décidèrent de l'aider.

They talked together and decided to help him.

Ils lui donnèrent un solide morceau de bois.

They gave him a strong piece of wood.

L'homme fabriqua un nouveau manche pour sa hache.

The man made a new handle for his axe.

Maintenant sa hache était très tranchante et solide.

Now his axe was very sharp and strong.

Mais alors l'homme se mit à abattre les arbres.

But then the man began to cut down the trees.

Il abattit de nombreux arbres dans la forêt.

He cut down many trees in the forest.

Les vieux arbres étaient très tristes.

The old trees were very sad.

Ils se dirent les uns aux autres,

They said to each other,

« Nous avons commis une grave erreur. »

"We made a big mistake."

Nous l'avons aidé à réparer sa hache.

"We helped him fix his axe."

Maintenant il s'en sert pour nous détruire.

"Now he is using it to destroy us."

Nous lui avons donné le pouvoir de nous faire du mal.

"We gave him the power to hurt us."

L'homme abattit de plus en plus d'arbres.

The man cut down more and more trees.

Les arbres ne pouvaient rien faire pour l'arrêter.

The trees could do nothing to stop him.
