The Frogs Who Desired a King
Un gruppo di rane che vivono pacificamente in uno stagno decide di volere un re che governi su di loro. Chiedono agli dei di mandare loro un sovrano, ma potrebbero non gradire quello che ricevono.
Molto tempo fa, molte rane vivevano in un grande stagno.
Long ago, many frogs lived in a big pond.
Erano felici e liberi.
They were happy and free.
Nessuno disse loro cosa fare. Un giorno, le rane parlarono insieme.
No one told them what to do. One day, the frogs talked together.
"Abbiamo bisogno di un re,"
"We need a king,"
hanno detto.
they said.
"Tutti gli animali dovrebbero avere un re che li governi."
"All animals should have a king to rule them."
Le rane chiesero agli dei un re.
The frogs asked the gods for a king.
"Per favore, dacci un re!"
"Please give us a king!"
dissero.
they said.
"Vogliamo qualcuno che ci guidi!"
"We want someone to lead us!"
Gli dei sentirono le rane.
The gods heard the frogs.
Gettarono un grande tronco nello stagno.
They threw a big log into the pond.
SPLASH!

Il tronco fece un forte rumore.
The log made a loud noise.
Le rane si spaventarono.
The frogs were scared.
Si nascosero sott'acqua.
They hid under the water.
"Il nostro re è qui!"
"Our king is here!"
sussurrarono.
they whispered.
"È così potente!"
"He is so powerful!"
Ma dopo un po' di tempo, le rane uscirono.
But after some time, the frogs came out.
Guardarono il tronco.
They looked at the log.

It did not move.
Non parlava.
It did not speak.

It just floated on the water.

The frogs became brave.
Saltarono sul tronco.
They jumped on the log.

They sat on it.

They played around it.
"Questo re non fa niente,"
"This king does nothing,"
dissero.
they said.
"È noioso!"
"He is boring!"
Le rane andarono di nuovo dagli dei.
The frogs went to the gods again.
"Vogliamo un nuovo re!"
"We want a new king!"
dissero.
they said.
"Dateci un vero re!"
"Give us a real king!"
"Dateci un re forte!"
"Give us a strong king!"
Gli dei erano arrabbiati.
The gods were angry.
Questa volta, mandarono una grande cicogna allo stagno.
This time, they sent a big stork to the pond.
La cicogna era alta e forte.
The stork was tall and strong.
Le rane all'inizio erano felici.
The frogs were happy at first.
"Guardate il nostro nuovo re!"
"Look at our new king!"
dissero.
they said.
"È così grande e bello!"
"He is so big and beautiful!"
Ma la cicogna aveva fame.
But the stork was hungry.
Cominciò a mangiare le rane.
He began to eat the frogs.
Una ad una, le catturava con il suo lungo becco.
One by one, he caught them with his long beak.
Le rane erano molto spaventate.
The frogs were very scared.
Corsero e si nascosero.
They ran and hid.
"Aiutateci!"
"Help us!"
gridarono agli dei.
they cried to the gods.

"Our king is eating us!"
Ma gli dei dissero:
But the gods said,
"Avete chiesto un re."
"You asked for a king."
"Ora ne avete uno."
"Now you have one."
"Dovete tenerlo."
"You must keep him."
Le rane impararono che a volte è meglio essere liberi che avere un cattivo governante.
The frogs learned that sometimes it is better to be free than to have a bad ruler.
