The Miller, His Son, and Their Donkey
Un meunier et son fils emmènent leur âne au marché, mais ils découvrent rapidement qu'essayer de faire plaisir à tous ceux qu'ils rencontrent en chemin leur cause des problèmes inattendus.
Un meunier et son fils se rendaient à la ville avec leur âne.
A miller and his son walked to town with their donkey.
Ils voulaient vendre l'âne au marché.
They wanted to sell the donkey at the market.

On the road, they met some people.
Les gens dirent,
The people said,
« Vous êtes sots ! »
"You are silly!"
« Pourquoi marches-tu alors que tu as un âne ? »
"Why do you walk when you have a donkey?"
« L'un de vous devrait monter sur l'âne ! »
"One of you should ride the donkey!"
Le meunier dit à son fils,
The miller told his son,
Monte sur l'âne.
"Get on the donkey."
Le fils monta sur l'âne et ils continuèrent à marcher.
The son got on the donkey and they continued walking.
Bientôt ils rencontrèrent d'autres personnes.
Soon they met other people.
Ces gens dirent,
These people said,
« Regardez ce garçon paresseux ! »
"Look at that lazy boy!"
Il monte à cheval tandis que son vieux père marche à pied.
"He rides while his old father walks."
« C'est le père qui devrait monter, pas le fils ! »
"The father should ride, not the son!"
Le fils descendit de l'âne.
The son got off the donkey.
Le meunier monta sur l'âne.
The miller got on the donkey.
Ils marchèrent encore un peu.
They walked some more.
Puis ils rencontrèrent d'autres personnes.
Then they met more people.
Ces gens dirent,
These people said,
« Quel mauvais père ! »
"What a bad father!"
« Il chevauche tandis que son pauvre fils marche sous le soleil ardent ! »
"He rides while his poor son walks in the hot sun!"
Le meunier dit à son fils,
The miller said to his son,
« Monte ici avec moi. »
"Come up here with me."
« Nous pouvons monter tous les deux sur l'âne. »
"We can both ride the donkey."
Le meunier et son fils montèrent tous deux sur l'âne.
Both the miller and his son got on the donkey.
L'âne marchait lentement car il portait deux personnes.
The donkey walked slowly because it was carrying two people.
Plus tard, ils rencontrèrent un autre groupe de personnes.
Later, they met another group of people.
Ces gens étaient en colère.
These people were angry.
Ils dirent,
They said,
Hommes cruels !
"You cruel men!"
« Ce pauvre âne est trop petit pour vous porter tous les deux ! »
"That poor donkey is too small to carry both of you!"
« Vous allez faire mal à l'animal ! »
"You will hurt the animal!"
Le meunier et son fils descendirent de l'âne.
The miller and his son got off the donkey.
Ils réfléchirent à ce qu'il fallait faire.
They thought about what to do.
Finalement, ils lièrent les pattes de l'âne ensemble.
Finally, they tied the donkey's legs together.

They put a long stick through the ropes.

The miller and his son dropped the donkey.
L'âne tomba dans la rivière et s'enfuit.
The donkey fell into the river and ran away.
Le meunier et son fils rentrèrent chez eux les mains vides.
The miller and his son went home with nothing.
