One day, a poor man came to my master Death.
"Please help me,"
he said.
"I have thirteen children but no money."
Death smiled.
He likes helping people sometimes.
"I will make your youngest son a great doctor,"
Death said.
"But he must follow my rules."
The man's son became Doctor Tom.
Death taught him a secret.
"Look at sick people,"
Death said.
"If I stand at their head, give them medicine."
"They will get better."
"If I stand at their feet, do nothing."
"They will die."
I watched Doctor Tom work.
He became very famous!
Rich people gave him gold coins.
Poor people brought him fresh fish.
But Doctor Tom got greedy.
One day, a rich king was dying.
I sat at the king's feet with Death.
This meant the king must die.
"Please move,"
Doctor Tom asked Death.
"I want the king's gold."
Death shook his head.
"No. It is his time."
Doctor Tom was sneaky.
He turned the king
's bed around!'
'Now Death stood at the king'
s head instead of his feet.
The king lived.
I meowed loudly.
This was not good!
Death was angry but gave Doctor Tom one warning.
"Never trick me again,"
Death said.
But Doctor Tom did not listen.
When the king's beautiful daughter got sick, Doctor Tom fell in love.
Again, Death stood at her feet.
Again, Doctor Tom turned the bed.
This time, Death grabbed Doctor Tom's hand.
"Your time is up,"
Death said.
Doctor Tom begged and cried.
But Death does not change his mind twice.
Now Doctor Tom is gone.
I am still here, watching from my throne.
Death pets my fur and says,
"Good cat, Luna. You saw everything."
And I purr because I know the truth: nobody tricks Death forever.
