Lors d'un trajet froid et pluvieux en tramway, Mira observe un conducteur frissonner tandis qu'il se penche pour essuyer sa vitre à mains nues. Elle rentre chez elle et invente un simple bras en caoutchouc qui fait le travail depuis l'intérieur de la cabine, mais personne dans l'industrie ne la croit.
Un hiver, une jeune femme nommée Mira visita une grande ville loin de chez elle.

Les rues étaient glacées et l'air était vif de froid.
The streets were icy and the air was sharp with cold.
Elle monta dans un tramway pour explorer la ville.
She climbed onto a streetcar to explore the city.
Le conducteur était assis à l'avant, se penchant dans la pluie glaciale pour voir la route.
The driver sat at the front, leaning out into the freezing rain to see the road.
Il essuya la vitre avec sa main nue encore et encore.
He wiped the window with his bare hand again and again.

Mira watched him shiver. She felt a knot of worry in her chest.

She wrote careful notes and sent the drawing to a patent office.

The patent arrived. The idea was hers.
Mais quand Mira le montra aux constructeurs automobiles, ils rirent.
But when Mira showed it to carmakers, they laughed.
"Les conducteurs le trouveront distrayant", dirent-ils. "Personne n'en veut."
"Drivers will find it distracting," they said. "No one wants it."
Mira était déçue, mais elle ne jeta pas son dessin.
Mira was disappointed, but she did not throw away her drawing.

Years passed. New carriages rolled onto new roads.

One by one, every vehicle began to carry a rubber arm on its window.
