Il y a longtemps, dans un royaume sillonné de rivières, vivait une jeune gardienne nommée Zara.
Long ago, in a kingdom crisscrossed by rivers, there lived a young keeper named Zara.
Zara était différente des autres gardiens.
Zara was different from the other keepers.
Pendant qu'ils ne regardaient que la surface de l'eau, Zara étudiait ce qui bougeait en dessous.
While they watched only the surface of the water, Zara studied what moved beneath.
Elle écoutait les petits tremblements à l'intérieur du courant.
She listened to the tiny trembles inside the current.
Elle remarqua comment les électrons, comme des poissons invisibles, traversaient certaines pierres.
She noticed how electrons, like invisible fish, darted through certain stones.
D'autres gardiens disaient : "Tu perds ton temps avec des choses que personne ne peut voir."
Other keepers said: "You are wasting time on things no one can see."
Mais Zara continua, consignant ses observations dans des cahiers soignés.
But Zara kept on, writing her observations in careful notebooks.
Un cahier se remplit, puis un autre, puis dix de plus.
One notebook filled up, and then another, and then ten more.
Avec le temps, elle apprit exactement comment guider un message à travers l'eau.
Over time, she learned exactly how to guide a message through the water.
Elle découvrit qu'un canal bien formé pouvait porter une voix d'un bout du royaume à l'autre.
She discovered that a well-shaped channel could carry a voice from one end of the kingdom to the other.
Les ingénieurs royaux lui rendirent visite un jour.
The royal engineers visited her one day.
"Pouvez-vous nous aider ?" demandèrent-ils. "Nos messagers arrivent toujours en retard."
"Can you help us?" they asked. "Our messengers keep arriving late."
Zara leur montra ses cahiers.
Zara showed them her notebooks.

Zara was not in the parade when the new channels were celebrated.

She was back in her workshop, studying the water again.
