La Confusion de la Nuit d'Halloween

Sarah adorait Halloween.

Sarah loved Halloween.

Elle adorait les citrouilles orange et les films d'horreur.

She loved the orange pumpkins and scary movies.

Mais cette nuit d'Halloween était différente.

Sarah vivait seule dans une petite maison de la rue Maple.

Le soir d'Halloween, Sarah regardait un film d'horreur.

Elle mangeait du pop-corn et des bonbons.

Quelqu'un marchait sur sa véranda.

Someone was walking on her front porch.

« C'est peut-être un retardataire qui fait du porte-à-porte pour l'Halloween », pensa Sarah.

"Maybe it's a late trick-or-treater," Sarah thought.

Elle regarda par la fenêtre.

She looked out the window.

Il n'y avait personne.

Nobody was there.

CRRRRAC.

CREAK.

CRAQUEMENT.

CREAK.

Le bruit se fit entendre de nouveau.

The sound came again.

Le cœur de Sarah battait la chamade.

Sarah's heart beat fast.

Ses chats avaient l'air effrayés eux aussi.

Her cats looked scared too.

Midnight se cacha sous le canapé.

Midnight hid under the sofa.

Shadow monta l'escalier en courant.

Shadow ran upstairs.

Seul Whiskers resta avec Sarah.

Only Whiskers stayed with Sarah.

Puis Sarah entendit un nouveau bruit.

Then Sarah heard a new sound.

Quelqu'un essayait d'ouvrir sa porte de derrière.

Someone was trying to open her back door.

La poignée de la porte bougeait de haut en bas, de haut en bas.

The door handle moved up and down, up and down.

Sarah avait très peur.

Sarah was very afraid.

Elle saisit son téléphone et appela le 911.

She grabbed her phone and called 911.

« Aidez-moi », chuchota-t-elle.

"Help me," she whispered.

« Quelqu'un essaie d'entrer dans ma maison. »

"Someone is trying to get into my house."

« Restez calme », dit l'agent de police.

"Stay calm," said the police officer.

Nous arrivons.

"We are coming.

Cachez-vous quelque part en sécurité.

Hide somewhere safe."

Sarah prit Whiskers dans ses bras et monta les escaliers en courant.

Sarah picked up Whiskers and ran upstairs.

Elle se cacha dans le placard de sa chambre.

She hid in her bedroom closet.

Elle pouvait entendre des pas en bas.

She could hear footsteps downstairs.

Quelqu'un était dans sa maison !

Someone was inside her house!

La personne traversa lentement sa cuisine.

The person walked slowly through her kitchen.

Puis à travers son salon.

Then through her living room.

Sarah entendit sa télévision s'allumer.

Sarah heard her TV turn on.

Elle entendit son réfrigérateur s'ouvrir et se fermer.

She heard her refrigerator open and close.

« Qui est dans ma maison ? »

"Who is in my house?"

pensa Sarah.

Sarah thought.

Que veulent-ils ?

"What do they want?"

Les pas montèrent l'escalier.

The footsteps came up the stairs.

Marche après marche, de plus en plus près.

Step by step, closer and closer.

Sarah serra Whiskers contre elle.

Sarah held Whiskers tight.

Le chat tremblait.

The cat was shaking.

La porte de la chambre s'ouvrit.

The bedroom door opened.

Sarah pouvait voir de la lumière sous la porte du placard.

Sarah could see light under the closet door.

Quelqu'un était dans sa chambre !

Someone was in her bedroom!

Puis elle entendit une voix.

Then she heard a voice.

Mais ce n'était pas une voix effrayante.

But it was not a scary voice.

C'était une voix triste.

It was a sad voice.

Maman ?

"Mom?

Tu es là, maman ?

Are you here, Mom?"

Sarah était confuse.

Sarah was confused.

Cette personne cherchait sa mère ?

This person was looking for their mother?

« Maman, je suis désolé d'être en retard », dit la voix.

"Mom, I'm sorry I'm late," the voice said.

J'ai apporté tes médicaments.

"I brought your medicine."

Sarah comprenait maintenant.

Sarah understood now.

Cette personne était perdue.

This person was lost.

Ils pensaient que c'était la maison de leur mère.

They thought this was their mother's house.

La police est arrivée avec des sirènes hurlantes.

The police arrived with loud sirens.

Ils sont entrés dans la maison.

They came into the house.

Ne bougez pas !

"Don't move!"

crièrent-ils.

they shouted.

Sarah sortit du placard.

Sarah came out of the closet.

Elle vit un jeune homme avec la police.

She saw a young man with the police.

Il avait l'air confus et effrayé.

He looked confused and scared.

Il tenait un sac de médicaments.

He was holding a bag of medicine.

« Ce n'est pas la maison de ma mère », dit-il tristement.

"This is not my mother's house," he said sadly.

J'ai fait une erreur.

"I made a mistake.

Ma mère habite sur l'avenue Maple, pas sur la rue Maple.

My mother lives on Maple Avenue, not Maple Street.

J'étais inquiet pour elle.

I was worried about her.

Elle est malade et a besoin de ses médicaments.

She is sick and needs her medicine."

Le policier regarda Sarah.

The police officer looked at Sarah.

« Ça va ? »

"Are you okay?"

« Oui », dit Sarah.

"Yes," said Sarah.

« Je pense qu'il a simplement fait une erreur. »

"I think he just made a mistake."

Le nom du jeune homme était David.

The young man's name was David.

Sa mère l'attendait sur l'avenue Maple.

His mother was waiting for him on Maple Avenue.

Sarah eut pitié de lui.

Sarah felt sorry for him.

« Ce n'est pas grave », dit Sarah à David.

"It's okay," Sarah told David.

Tu essayais d'aider ta mère.

"You were trying to help your mother.

C'est bien.

That's good."

David s'est excusé plusieurs fois.

David said sorry many times.

La police l'a emmené chez sa mère sur Maple Avenue.

The police took him to his mother's house on Maple Avenue.

Sarah verrouilla ses portes et ses fenêtres.

Sarah locked her doors and windows.

Elle serra ses trois chats dans ses bras.

She hugged her three cats.

« Quelle soirée d'Halloween de folie », dit-elle.

"What a crazy Halloween night," she said.

Mais Sarah apprit quelque chose d'important cette nuit-là.

But Sarah learned something important that night.

Parfois, des choses effrayantes arrivent parce que les gens font des erreurs.

Sometimes scary things happen because people make mistakes.

Parfois, le « monstre » n'est qu'une personne qui a besoin d'aide.

Sometimes the "monster" is just someone who needs help.

À partir de cet Halloween-là, Sarah vérifiait toujours deux fois avant d'appeler la police.

From that Halloween on, Sarah always checked twice before calling the police.

Et elle se souvenait toujours d'être bienveillante, même quand elle avait peur.

And she always remembered to be kind, even when she was scared.

Le lendemain, David revint avec sa mère.

The next day, David came back with his mother.

Ils ont apporté des fleurs et des biscuits à Sarah pour la remercier de sa compréhension.

They brought Sarah flowers and cookies to say thank you for being understanding.

« Tu as bon cœur », dit la mère de David.

"You have a good heart," David's mother said.

Sarah sourit.

Sarah smiled.
