Questa è una favola tradizionale sulla giustizia e l'avidità. Ci insegna che cercare di far pagare per cose che non costano nulla può portare a non ricevere nulla in cambio.
Molto tempo fa in una città affollata, viveva un uomo povero di nome Tom.
Long ago in a busy town, there lived a poor man named Tom.

He had no money for food, but every day he walked past a baker's shop.

The baker made the most wonderful bread.

The smell was so good that Tom would stop and breathe it in deeply.
Un giorno, Tom portò da casa un pezzo di pane duro e secco.
One day, Tom brought a piece of hard, dry bread from home.

He stood outside the baker's shop and held his bread near the window.
Mentre sentiva l'odore del pane fresco all'interno, mangiò il suo pezzo secco.
As he smelled the fresh bread inside, he ate his own dry piece.

The good smell made his poor meal taste better.

The baker saw this happen many times.
Si arrabbiò.
He became angry.

"This man is stealing from me!"

Il fornaio andò dal giudice.
The baker went to the judge.

"This poor man steals the smell of my bread every day," he told the judge.

"He must pay me for what he has taken."
Il giudice pensò che fosse un caso strano, ma chiamò Tom in tribunale.
The judge thought this was a strange case, but he called Tom to court.

"Is it true that you smell the baker's bread?"
chiese il giudice.
asked the judge.
Sì, signore," disse Tom.
"Yes, sir," said Tom.

"I have no money for good food.

Il giudice si rivolse al fornaio.
The judge turned to the baker.

"How much money do you want for the stolen smell?"
Tre monete d'argento," disse il fornaio con un sorriso avido.
"Three silver coins," said the baker with a greedy smile.
Il giudice annuì.
The judge nodded.
Chiese a Tom: "Hai tre monete d'argento?
He asked Tom, "Do you have three silver coins?"
Tom mise la mano in tasca e tirò fuori le sue ultime tre monete.
Tom reached into his pocket and pulled out his last three coins.
Erano tutto quello che aveva al mondo.
They were all he had in the world.
Agita le monete nella tua mano," disse il giudice.
"Shake the coins in your hand," said the judge.
Tom scosse le monete.
Tom shook the coins.
Facevano un suono squillante piacevole.
They made a pleasant ringing sound.
Fornaio, hai sentito quel suono?
"Baker, did you hear that sound?"
chiese il giudice.
