My name is Chicken Number One.

J'ai vécu dans le potager de Gretel.

I lived in Gretel's kitchen garden.

Je dois vous raconter ce qui est arrivé à mon ami Poule Numéro Deux. Gretel travaillait pour un homme riche.

I must tell you what happened to my friend Chicken Number Two. Gretel worked for a rich man.

L'homme riche avait un ami qui venait dîner.

The rich man had a friend coming for dinner.

Gretel cuisina mon ami pour leur repas.

Gretel cooked my friend for their meal.

Elle l'a mis au four.

She put him in the oven.

Il sentait très bon.

He smelled very good.

L'homme riche alla chercher du vin dans sa cave.

The rich man went to get wine from his cellar.

Il prit beaucoup de temps.

He took a long time.

Gretel eut faim.

Gretel got hungry.

Elle pensa,

She thought,

« Je devrais goûter le poulet. »

"I should taste the chicken."

Juste un petit peu.

"Just a little bit."

Elle mangea une aile.

She ate one wing.

Oh !

"Oh!"

« C'est si bon ! »

"This is so good!"

dit-elle.

she said.

Puis elle mangea l'autre aile.

Then she ate the other wing.

« Il faut que je mange un peu plus »,

"I must eat a little more,"

dit-elle.

she said.

Elle mangea et mangea.

She ate and ate.

Bientôt, elle dévora tout mon ami !

Soon, she ate all of my friend!

L'homme riche revint.

The rich man came back.

« Où est mon ami ? »

"Where is my friend?"

demanda-t-il.

he asked.

« Est-il déjà arrivé ? »

"Is he here yet?"

"Non,"

"No,"

dit Gretel.

said Gretel.

« Mais il est venu plus tôt. »

"But he came earlier."

Il regarda la poule.

"He looked at the chicken."

Puis il s'enfuit avec !

"Then he ran away with it!"

« Il a dit 'Merci pour le dîner gratuit !' et il est parti ! »

"He said 'Thank you for the free dinner!' and left!"

L'homme riche se mit très en colère.

The rich man got very angry.

Il courut dehors pour retrouver son ami.

He ran outside to find his friend.

Il cria,

He shouted,

« Reviens ! »

"Come back!"

« Rendez-moi ma poule ! »

"Give me my chicken!"

Son ami remontait le sentier.

His friend was walking up the path.

Il entendit les cris.

He heard the shouting.

Il pensait que l'homme riche était fou.

He thought the rich man was crazy.

Alors il s'enfuit !

So he ran away!

Gretel rit et rit encore.

Gretel laughed and laughed.

Elle a eu un dîner gratuit.

She got a free dinner.

L'homme riche perdit son ami.

The rich man lost his friend.

Et j'ai perdu mon ami aussi.

And I lost my friend too.

Mais j'ai appris quelque chose d'important : Ne jamais faire confiance à un cuisinier affamé !
