Quando luzes estranhas começam a cair do céu gelado da Sibéria, uma pequena aldeia precisa descobrir se esses visitantes misteriosos trazem esperança ou perigo para seu mundo isolado. Every night, she looked up at the moon and made wishes.

One morning in June 1908, something very strange happened.
Masha acordou cedo para ajudar a avó a alimentar as galinhas.
Masha woke up early to help her grandmother feed the chickens.
O sol estava apenas nascendo.
The sun was just coming up.
Os pássaros cantavam suas canções matinais.
The birds were singing their morning songs.

Suddenly, the sky became very bright.

It was brighter than the sun!
Masha olhou para cima e viu uma enorme bola de fogo atravessando o céu.
Masha looked up and saw a huge ball of fire moving across the sky.
Era maior do que qualquer coisa que ela já tinha visto.
It was bigger than anything she had ever seen.
A bola de fogo era branca, azul e laranja.
The fireball was white and blue and orange.
Moveu-se muito rapidamente.
It moved very fast.
Vovó!
"Grandmother!"
gritou Masha.
Masha called.
Venha depressa!
"Come quickly!
Olha o céu!
Look at the sky!"
A avó dela correu para fora.
Her grandmother ran outside.
Ela nunca tinha visto nada assim antes.
She had never seen anything like this before.
Outras pessoas da aldeia saíram de suas casas.
Other people in the village came out of their houses.
Todos apontaram para a estranha luz no céu.
Everyone pointed at the strange light in the sky.
A bola de fogo atravessou o céu por muitos segundos.
The fireball moved across the sky for many seconds.
Então desapareceu atrás das árvores na floresta.
Then it disappeared behind the trees in the forest.
Por um momento, tudo ficou em silêncio.
For a moment, everything was quiet.
Os pássaros pararam de cantar.
The birds stopped singing.
Até o vento parou de soprar.
Even the wind stopped blowing.
Então veio o som mais alto que Masha já tinha ouvido.
Then came the loudest sound Masha had ever heard.
ESTRONDO!
BOOM!
O chão tremeu sob seus pés.
The ground shook under her feet.
As janelas de sua casa se quebraram.
The windows in her house broke.
As galinhas correram para todos os lados.
The chickens ran everywhere.
A avó dela caiu.
Her grandmother fell down.

"What is happening?"
Masha gritou.
Masha cried.
Um vento forte veio da floresta.
A huge wind came from the forest.
Era tão forte que derrubou árvores.
It was so strong that it knocked down trees.
Arrancou o telhado da casa do vizinho.
It blew away the roof of their neighbor's house.
Masha e sua avó se agarraram uma à outra com força.

The strange morning continued for hours.

They heard more loud sounds from far away.

Smoke rose from the forest like a giant gray cloud.

Days later, people from the city came to their village.

They asked many questions about the bright light and the loud sounds.

They wanted to know what everyone saw and heard.
"Foi uma estrela que caiu do céu?"
"Was it a star that fell from heaven?"
perguntou Masha.

"Talvez", disse um homem com um caderno grande.
"Maybe," said one man with a big notebook.
"Ou talvez tenha sido uma rocha do espaço.
"Or maybe it was a rock from space.
Chamamos essas pedras do espaço de meteoros.
We call these space rocks meteors."
O homem explicou que o meteoro era muito grande.
The man explained that the meteor was very big.
Quando atingiu a atmosfera da Terra, ficou muito quente.
When it hit the Earth's air, it got very hot.
Explodiu bem alto, acima da floresta.
It exploded high above the forest.
A explosão foi tão poderosa que derrubou milhões de árvores.
The explosion was so powerful that it knocked down millions of trees.
Era como muitas bombas explodindo ao mesmo tempo.
It was like many bombs exploding at the same time.
Mas por que veio parar aqui?
"But why did it come here?"
perguntou Masha.
asked Masha.
"Rochas espaciais voam por toda parte", disse o homem.
"Space rocks fly everywhere," the man said.
A maioria é muito pequena.
"Most are very small.
Esta era especial porque era muito grande.
This one was special because it was so big.
Foi o maior a atingir a Terra em muitos, muitos anos.
It was the biggest one to hit Earth in many, many years."
Masha soube que a explosão aconteceu perto do rio Tunguska.
Masha learned that the explosion happened near the Tunguska River.
As pessoas ao redor do mundo sentiram o chão tremer.
People around the world felt the ground shake.
Algumas pessoas distantes viram luzes brilhantes no céu por dias.
Some people far away saw bright lights in the sky for days.
A partir daquele dia, Masha sempre se lembrou da manhã em que o fogo caiu do céu.
