Clever Elsie
Uma jovem chamada Elsie é conhecida por ser muito esperta, mas quando vai buscar cerveja na adega, seus pensamentos excessivos levam a consequências inesperadas. Sua família e amigos descobrem que às vezes ser esperta demais pode causar mais problemas do que soluções.

Today I must tell you about Elsie. Elsie thinks too much.
Ela pensa em tudo.
She thinks about everything.
Ela pensa em coisas que nunca acontecerão.
She thinks about things that will never happen.
A mãe manda-a buscar cerveja no porão.
Her mother sends her to get beer from the basement.
Trabalho simples, não é?
Simple job, right?
Errado!
Wrong!
Elsie desce as escadas.
Elsie goes down the stairs.
Ela vê o barril de cerveja.
She sees the beer barrel.
Mas então ela ergue o olhar.
But then she looks up.
Há um machado velho na parede acima do barril.
There is an old axe in the wall above the barrel.
Oh não!
"Oh no!"
pensa Elsie.
thinks Elsie.
"E se eu me casar?"
"What if I get married?"
"E se o meu marido vier aqui beber cerveja?"
"What if my husband comes here for beer?"
"E se o machado cair na cabeça dele?"
"What if the axe falls on his head?"
"E se ele morrer?"
"What if he dies?"
Ela se senta e chora.
She sits down and cries.
Ela chora e chora.
She cries and cries.
Tique-taque, tique-taque.
Tick-tock, tick-tock.
Uma hora passa.
One hour passes.
Duas horas passam.
Two hours pass.
A mãe vai procurar Elsie.
Mother goes to find Elsie.
Ela a encontra chorando no porão.
She finds her crying in the basement.
"O machado vai matar meu futuro marido!"
"The axe will kill my future husband!"
grita Elsie.
cries Elsie.
"Ai, meu Deus!"
"Oh my!"
diz a Mãe.
says Mother.
"Você é tão inteligente por pensar nisso!"
"You are so smart to think of this!"
A mãe também começa a chorar.
Mother starts crying too.
O pai desce.
Father comes down.
"Por que vocês dois estão chorando?"
"Why are you both crying?"
Elas lhe contam sobre o machado e o futuro marido.
They tell him about the axe and the future husband.
"A Elsie é tão esperta!"
"Elsie is so clever!"
diz o Pai.
says Father.
Ele também começa a chorar.
He starts crying too.
Até o vizinho desce.
Even the neighbor comes down.
Logo todos estão chorando pelo futuro marido de Elsie e pelo machado perigoso.
Soon everyone is crying about Elsie's future husband and the dangerous axe.
Tique-taque, tique-taque.
Tick-tock, tick-tock.
Eu vi muitas coisas, mas esta é a mais tola.
I have seen many things, but this is the silliest.
O barril de cerveja ainda está cheio.
The beer barrel is still full.
O machado ainda está na parede.
The axe is still in the wall.
E Elsie ainda não se casou.
And Elsie is still not married.
Mas todos acham que ela é muito, muito inteligente.
But everyone thinks she is very, very clever.
Tique-taque, tique-taque.
Tick-tock, tick-tock.
