He was very, very old.

He had seen many things change over the years.

"Tell us a story!"
dijeron los animales jóvenes un día.
said the young animals one day.
El Abuelo Tortuga sonrió.
Grandfather Turtle smiled.
Hace mucho tiempo, este jardín era diferente.
"Long ago, this garden was different."
Las jirafas tenían cuellos cortos.
"The giraffes had short necks."
Los elefantes tenían orejas pequeñas.
"The elephants had small ears."
Los pájaros no tenían colores.
"The birds had no colors."

"That's silly!"
se rió un loro rojo brillante.

"But it's true,"
dijo el Abuelo Tortuga.
said Grandfather Turtle.

"You see, the garden has magic rules."

"Animals that need something get it slowly, over many years."

"What do you mean?"
preguntó una jirafa bebé.
asked a baby giraffe.

"Your great-great-great grandmother could not reach the tall leaves."
Se estiró y se estiró todos los días.
"She stretched and stretched every day."
Sus hijos también se estiraron.
"Her children stretched too."
Después de muchos, muchos años, los cuellos de las jirafas se volvieron largos.
"After many, many years, giraffe necks became long."
Un elefante gris agitó sus grandes orejas.
A gray elephant flapped his big ears.
¿Y nosotros qué?
"What about us?"
"Tu familia vivía donde hacía mucho calor."
"Your family lived where it was very hot."
"Los elefantes con orejas más grandes se mantenían frescos."
"The elephants with bigger ears stayed cool."
Tuvieron crías con orejas grandes también.
"They had babies with big ears too."
Las orejas pequeñas desaparecieron.
"Small ears disappeared."
Los animales se veían asombrados.
The animals looked amazed.
"¿Y nosotras las aves?"
"And us birds?"
preguntó el loro.

"Las aves brillantes encontraban pareja más fácilmente."
"Bright birds found mates easier."
Los pájaros grises eran más difíciles de ver desde el peligro.
"Gray birds were harder to see from danger."
El jardín conservaba lo mejor de ambos.
"The garden kept the best of both."
Algunos pájaros se volvieron coloridos.
"Some birds became colorful."
Algunas permanecieron ocultas.
"Some stayed hidden."
Los animales jóvenes reflexionaron profundamente.
The young animals thought hard.
"¿Entonces todos cambiamos?"
"So we all change?"
preguntó la jirafa bebé.
asked the baby giraffe.

"Yes,"
dijo el Abuelo Tortuga.
said Grandfather Turtle.

"The garden is always changing us."

"We become what we need to be."

"It takes a very long time, but it always works."

The animals looked at each other with wonder.
