A la pequeña Emma le encantaba Halloween.

Se puso su disfraz de gato y se miró en el espejo.

She put on her cat costume and looked in the mirror.

Her black ears were perfect.

Su cola era larga y esponjosa.

Her tail was long and fluffy.

She was ready to get candy.

"Ten cuidado," le dijo su mamá.

"Be careful," said her mom.

She knocked three times.

A tall man stood there.

He wore a white ghost mask.

The mask had big black holes for eyes.

Su boca estaba pintada de rojo como sangre.

His mouth was painted red like blood.

"Dulce o truco", dijo Emma.

"Trick or treat," said Emma.

Su voz era suave ahora.

Her voice was quiet now.

El hombre no habló.

The man did not speak.

Le ofreció un tazón de dulces.

He held out a bowl of candy.

Pero los dulces se veían viejos.

But the candy looked old.

Estaba cubierto de polvo y telarañas.

It was covered with dust and spider webs.

Emma alcanzó un pedazo.

Emma reached for a piece.

El hombre le agarró la muñeca.

The man grabbed her wrist.

Su mano estaba fría como el hielo.

His hand was cold like ice.

"Gracias por venir," dijo.

"Thank you for coming," he said.

Su voz era profunda y extraña.

His voice was deep and strange.

He estado esperándote.

"I have been waiting for you."

Emma trató de alejarse.

Emma tried to pull away.

Pero la mano del hombre era demasiado fuerte.

But the man's hand was too strong.

¡Suéltame!

"Let me go!"

gritó ella.

El hombre se rió.

The man laughed.

"You wanted candy.

Ahora debes pagar el precio.

Now you must pay the price."

Arrastró a Emma hacia el interior de la casa oscura.

He pulled Emma into the dark house.

La puerta se cerró con un fuerte golpe.

The door closed with a loud bang.

Adentro, la casa estaba llena de telarañas.

Inside, the house was full of spider webs.

Había muebles viejos por todas partes.

Old furniture was everywhere.

Los ratones corrían por el suelo.

Mice ran across the floor.

El aire olía a calcetines viejos.

The air smelled like old socks.

"Siéntate", dijo el hombre.

"Sit down," said the man.

Señaló una silla vieja.

He pointed to an old chair.

Emma estaba asustada.

Emma was scared.

Pero entonces se le ocurrió una idea.

But then she had an idea.

Recordó lo que le había enseñado su hermano mayor.

She remembered what her big brother taught her.

—Espera —dijo.

"Wait," she said.

Te olvidaste de algo.

"You forgot something."

¿Qué?

"What?"

preguntó el hombre.

asked the man.

"Debes darme una opción.

"You must give me a choice.

Dulce o truco.

Trick or treat.

Dije dulce.

I said treat.

Me diste dulces.

You gave me candy.

Pero si el dulce está malo, puedo elegir travesura en su lugar.

But if the candy is bad, I can choose trick instead."

El hombre se detuvo.

The man stopped.

Pensó en esto.

He thought about this.

"Tienes razón", dijo lentamente.

"You are right," he said slowly.

¿Qué truco quieres?

"What trick do you want?"

Emma sonrió.

Emma smiled.

"Quiero ver tu verdadero rostro."

"I want to see your real face."

El hombre permaneció en silencio durante mucho tiempo.

The man was quiet for a long time.

Entonces levantó la mano y se quitó la máscara.

Then he reached up and pulled off his mask.

Debajo había un anciano bondadoso de cabello blanco.

Underneath was a kind old man with white hair.

Se veía triste y solitario.

He looked sad and lonely.

"Solo quería que alguien viniera a visitarme", dijo.

"I just wanted someone to visit me," he said.

Ya nadie viene a mi casa.

"No one comes to my house anymore.

Pensé que la máscara haría Halloween más divertido.

I thought the mask would make Halloween more fun."

Emma sintió lástima por él.

Emma felt sorry for him.

No necesitas una máscara que dé miedo.

"You don't need a scary mask.

Solo sé amable y la gente te visitará.

Just be nice and people will visit."

Ella lo ayudó a limpiar su casa y compartió sus dulces.

She helped him clean his house and shared her candy.

Se hicieron buenos amigos.

They became good friends.

A partir de ese día, Emma lo visitaba todas las semanas.

From that day on, Emma visited him every week.

Y cada Halloween, él repartía los mejores dulces de la calle Maple.

And every Halloween, he gave out the best candy on Maple Street.
