Un burro lleva una estatua preciosa por el pueblo y nota que la gente se inclina respetuosamente cuando pasa. Comienza a sentirse muy orgulloso e importante, sin darse cuenta de la verdadera razón de su respeto.
Un burro llevaba una estatua de un dios sobre su lomo.
A donkey was carrying a statue of a god on his back.
La estatua estaba hecha de oro y era muy hermosa.
The statue was made of gold and was very beautiful.
La gente en el camino vio la estatua y se inclinó para orar.
People on the road saw the statue and bowed down to pray.
El burro pensó que la gente se inclinaba ante él.
The donkey thought the people were bowing to him.
Se sintió muy orgulloso e importante.
He felt very proud and important.
¡Mírenme!
"Look at me!"

El burro comenzó a caminar lentamente.
The donkey started to walk slowly.

He held his head high and felt like a king.
Pero entonces el dueño del burro le quitó la estatua de la espalda.
But then the donkey's owner took the statue off his back.
La gente dejó de inclinarse.
The people stopped bowing.
Se alejaron sin mirar al burro.
They walked away without looking at the donkey.

Un viejo caballo vio lo que pasó.
An old horse saw what happened.
El caballo le dijo al burro,
The horse said to the donkey,
"Amigo mío, la gente no se inclinaba ante ti."
"My friend, the people were not bowing to you."
"Se inclinaban ante la estatua que llevabas."
"They were bowing to the statue you were carrying."
Solo estabas ayudando a cargarla.
"You were just helping to carry it."
El burro se sintió tonto.
The donkey felt silly.
Aprendió que no era especial por lo que llevaba cargando.
He learned that he was not special because of what he was carrying.
Los elogios pertenecían a la estatua, no a él.
The praise belonged to the statue, not to him.
