Near the tree lived a small bramble bush with thorns.

El abeto siempre miraba con desprecio a la zarza.

The fir tree always looked down at the bramble.

"¡Mira qué alto soy!"

"Look how tall I am!"

dijo el abeto.

"Alcanzo hacia el cielo."

"I reach up to the sky."

Eres tan pequeño y feo.

"You are so small and ugly."

"Tus espinas son afiladas y crueles."

"Your thorns are sharp and mean."

"Soy mucho mejor que tú."

"I am much better than you."

El zarzal permaneció en silencio.

The bramble bush stayed quiet.

No le respondió nada al árbol altivo.

It did not say anything back to the proud tree.

Un día, llegaron hombres al bosque.

One day, men came to the forest.

Tenían hachas grandes.

They had big axes.

Miraron todos los árboles.

They looked at all the trees.

Cuando vieron el alto abeto, sonrieron.

When they saw the tall fir tree, they smiled.

¡Este árbol es perfecto!

"This tree is perfect!"

dijo uno de los hombres.

said one man.

"Es tan alto y derecho."

"It is so tall and straight."

Podemos usarlo para construir una casa.

"We can use it to build a house."

Los hombres comenzaron a talar el abeto.

The men began to cut down the fir tree.

El árbol tenía miedo.

The tree was scared.

¡Ayúdame!

"Help me!"

gritó.

¡No quiero que me corten!

"I don't want to be cut down!"

La pequeña zarza observaba con tristeza.

The small bramble watched sadly.

Dijo,

It said,

Ojalá pudiera ayudarte, pero no puedo.

"I wish I could help you, but I cannot."

"Siempre estuviste orgulloso de ser alto."

"You were always proud of being tall."

"Pero a veces es mejor ser pequeño y estar a salvo."

"But sometimes it is better to be small and safe."

Los hombres cortaron el abeto y se lo llevaron.

The men cut down the fir tree and took it away.
