How Tiger Got His Stripes

Long ago, Tiger had no stripes.

He was very proud and mean to other animals.

One hot day, Tiger went to the river to drink water.

An old man sat by the river.

He had a fire and was cooking rice.

Tiger walked to the man.

"Give me your food,"

The old man looked at Tiger.

"I worked hard for this food."

Tiger got very angry.

"I will eat you!"

The old man was not afraid.

"I have something stronger than you,"
disse.
he said.

"What is stronger than me?"

Tiger asked.

"My wisdom,"
disse il vecchio.
the old man said.
La Tigre rise.
Tiger laughed.
"Mostrami questa saggezza!"
"Show me this wisdom!"
Il vecchio pensò.
The old man thought.
"Ho lasciato la mia saggezza a casa."
"I left my wisdom at home."
"Aspetta qui."
"Wait here."
"Non muoverti."
"Do not move."
Il vecchio prese una corda e legò la Tigre a un albero.
The old man took rope and tied Tiger to a tree.
"Ora non puoi seguirmi,"
"Now you cannot follow me,"
disse.
he said.
La Tigre tirò e tirò ma non riuscì a liberarsi.
Tiger pulled and pulled but could not get free.
Il fuoco era molto vicino a lei.
The fire was very close to him.

The old man untied Tiger.
Ma il fuoco aveva bruciato la pelliccia della Tigre.
But the fire had burned Tiger's fur.
Ora la Tigre aveva strisce nere su tutto il suo corpo arancione.
Now Tiger had black stripes all over his orange body.
La Tigre si guardò nel fiume.
Tiger looked at himself in the river.
Vide le sue nuove strisce e si sentì triste.
He saw his new stripes and felt sad.

"This is what happens when you are mean,"

the old man said.

"Your stripes will remind you to be kind."

From that day, Tiger was nicer to other animals.
