Long ago, Anansi the spider lived alone.

Chaque jour il se promenait dans la forêt à la recherche d'une épouse.

Every day he walked in the forest looking for a wife.

Un jour, Anansi vit un bel arbre.

One day, Anansi saw a beautiful tree.

L'arbre abritait une belle femme en son sein.

The tree had a lovely woman inside it.

Elle était l'Épouse de l'Arbre.

She was the Tree Wife.

Veux-tu m'épouser ?

"Will you marry me?"

demanda Anansi.

asked Anansi.

« Oui, »

"Yes,"

dit l'Épouse-Arbre.

said the Tree Wife.

« Mais tu ne dois jamais révéler mon secret à personne. »

"But you must never tell anyone my secret."

« Tu ne dois jamais dire que je viens d'un arbre. »

"You must never say I come from a tree."

Anansi était très heureux.

Anansi was very happy.

Il promit de garder le secret.

He promised to keep the secret.

L'Épouse-Arbre sortit de l'arbre et rentra chez elle avec Anansi. Ils vécurent heureux ensemble.

The Tree Wife came out of the tree and went home with Anansi. They lived happily together.

L'Épouse-Arbre cuisinait de bons plats.

The Tree Wife cooked good food.

Elle tenait leur maison propre.

She kept their house clean.

Elle était très gentille avec Anansi. Mais Anansi aimait parler.

She was very kind to Anansi. But Anansi liked to talk.

Il aimait raconter des histoires.

He liked to tell stories.

Il lui était difficile de garder des secrets.

It was hard for him to keep secrets.

Un jour, les amis d'Anansi vinrent lui rendre visite.

One day, Anansi's friends came to visit.

Ils virent sa belle épouse.

They saw his beautiful wife.

« Où avez-vous trouvé une épouse si merveilleuse ? »

"Where did you find such a wonderful wife?"

demandèrent-ils.

Anansi voulait le leur dire.

Anansi wanted to tell them.

Il était fier de sa femme.

He was proud of his wife.

Il oublia sa promesse.

He forgot his promise.

Ma femme vient d'un arbre !

"My wife comes from a tree!"

dit Anansi.

said Anansi.

« Elle est l'Épouse de l'Arbre ! »

"She is the Tree Wife!"

Dès qu'il eut dit cela, sa femme devint très triste.

As soon as he said this, his wife became very sad.

Elle se dirigea vers la porte.

She walked to the door.

« Tu as rompu ta promesse, »

"You broke your promise,"

dit-elle.

she said.

« Maintenant je dois retourner à mon arbre. »

"Now I must go back to my tree."

L'Épouse-Arbre s'enfonça dans la forêt.

The Tree Wife walked into the forest.

Anansi courut après elle, mais il était trop tard.

Anansi ran after her, but it was too late.

Elle rentra dans son arbre.

She went back inside her tree.

Anansi était de nouveau seul.

Anansi was alone again.

Il apprit que tenir ses promesses est très important.

He learned that keeping promises is very important.

Certains secrets ne doivent jamais être révélés.

Some secrets should never be told.
