Les gens l'appelaient le Métamorphe. Le Métamorphe était méchant.

The people called him the Shapeshifter. The Shapeshifter was mean.

Il se transformait en grand lion pour effrayer les gens.

He would change into a big lion to scare people.

Puis il prenait leur nourriture et leur argent.

Then he would take their food and money.

Tous les gens avaient peur.

All the people were afraid.

Ils demandèrent à Anansi de les aider.

They asked Anansi to help them.

« J'arrêterai cet homme mauvais »,

"I will stop this bad man,"

dit Anansi.

said Anansi.

« Mais je dois réfléchir à un bon plan. »

"But I need to think of a good plan."

Anansi observa le Métamorphe pendant de nombreux jours.

Il vit que l'homme était très orgueilleux.

Il aimait faire étalage de ses pouvoirs magiques.

Anansi eut une idée.

Il se rendit chez le Métamorphe.

dit Anansi.

« J'ai entendu dire que tu peux te transformer en n'importe quel animal. »

"I heard you can change into any animal."

Est-ce que c'est vrai ?

"Is this true?"

"Oui !"

"Yes!"

dit le Métamorphe.

« Je suis le meilleur ! »

"I am the best!"

"Regardez-moi !"

"Watch me!"

Le Métamorphe se transforma en un grand éléphant.

The Shapeshifter changed into a big elephant.

Puis il devint un cheval rapide.

Then he became a fast horse.

Puis il se transforma en serpent effrayant.

Then he turned into a scary snake.

« Très bien, »

"Very good,"

dit Anansi.

said Anansi.

« Mais peux-tu aussi devenir de très petits animaux ? »

"But can you become very small animals too?"

Bien sûr !

"Of course!"

dit le Métamorphe.

« Je peux être n'importe quoi ! »

"I can be anything!"

Il se transforma en petit oiseau.

He changed into a small bird.

Puis il devint une minuscule souris.

"Amazing!"

dit Anansi.

said Anansi.

« Mais je pense qu'il y a une chose que tu ne peux pas faire. »

"But I think there is one thing you cannot do."

Quoi ?

"What?"

demanda le Métamorphe.

« Je peux tout faire ! »

"I can do everything!"

« Peux-tu devenir aussi petit qu'une araignée ? »

"Can you become as small as a spider?"

demanda Anansi.

asked Anansi.

« Facile ! »

"Easy!"

dit le Métamorphe.

said the Shapeshifter.

Il devint de plus en plus petit jusqu'à ce qu'il ne soit plus qu'une minuscule araignée.

He became smaller and smaller until he was a tiny spider.

Rapidement, Anansi sortit un petit pot.

Quickly, Anansi took out a small jar.

Il attrapa la minuscule araignée à l'intérieur et referma hermétiquement le couvercle.

He caught the tiny spider inside and closed the lid tight.

« Laissez-moi sortir ! »

"Let me out!"

cria le Métamorphe depuis l'intérieur du bocal.

cried the Shapeshifter from inside the jar.

« Non, »

"No,"

dit Anansi.

said Anansi.

« Tu as été méchant envers mon peuple. »

"You were mean to my people."

« Maintenant tu dois rester dans cette jarre. »

"Now you must stay in this jar."

Anansi emporta le pot loin du village.

Anansi took the jar far away from the village.

Il la cacha sous un gros rocher où personne ne pourrait la trouver. Le village était de nouveau en sécurité.

He put it under a big rock where no one could find it. The village was safe again.

Les gens remercièrent Anansi d'avoir été si intelligent et courageux.

The people thanked Anansi for being so smart and brave.

À partir de ce jour, chacun se souvint que trop d'orgueil peut vous attirer des ennuis.

Et parfois, la plus petite araignée peut attraper le plus grand ennemi.
