Il y a longtemps, vivait une araignée nommée Anansi.

Long ago, there lived a spider named Anansi.

Il était très malin mais aussi très avide.

He was very clever but also very greedy.

Anansi voulait toujours plus de choses pour lui-même.

Anansi always wanted more things for himself.

Un jour, Anansi trouva un miroir magique dans la forêt.

One day, Anansi found a magic mirror in the forest.

Le miroir était magnifique et brillant.

The mirror was beautiful and shiny.

Quand il regarda dedans, il vit quelque chose d'extraordinaire.

When he looked into it, he saw something amazing.

Le miroir lui révéla toute la sagesse du monde.

The mirror showed him all the wisdom in the world.

C'est merveilleux !

"This is wonderful!"

dit Anansi.

said Anansi.

« Maintenant je serai la personne la plus intelligente du monde. »

"Now I will be the smartest person in the world."

Mais je dois garder ce miroir en sécurité.

"But I must keep this mirror safe."

Je ne veux pas que quelqu'un d'autre s'en serve.

"I don't want anyone else to use it."

Anansi décida de cacher le miroir au sommet d'un grand arbre.

Anansi decided to hide the mirror at the top of a tall tree.

Il attacha le miroir à sa poitrine avec une corde.

He tied the mirror to his chest with rope.

Puis il commença à grimper à l'arbre.

Then he started to climb the tree.

Mais grimper était très difficile avec le miroir sur sa poitrine.

But climbing was very hard with the mirror on his chest.

Anansi n'arrêtait pas de glisser vers le bas.

Anansi kept slipping down.

Il essaya de nombreuses fois mais ne put atteindre le sommet.

He tried many times but could not reach the top.

Un petit garçon observait Anansi.

A small boy was watching Anansi.

Le garçon dit,

The boy said,

« Pourquoi ne t'attaches-tu pas le miroir dans le dos ? »

"Why don't you tie the mirror to your back?"

"Ainsi tu pourras mieux grimper."

"Then you can climb better."

Anansi s'arrêta de grimper.

Anansi stopped climbing.

Il se sentit très surpris et embarrassé.

He felt very surprised and embarrassed.

Voici qu'il tentait de garder toute la sagesse pour lui seul, mais un petit enfant était plus intelligent que lui.

Here he was, trying to keep all the wisdom for himself, but a small child was smarter than him.

« Si ce petit garçon est si sage, »

"If this little boy is so wise,"

pensa Anansi,

thought Anansi,

« alors la sagesse appartient à tous, pas seulement à moi. »

"then wisdom belongs to everyone, not just me."

Anansi descendit de l'arbre.

Anansi climbed down the tree.

Il prit le miroir magique et le jeta au sol.

He took the magic mirror and threw it on the ground.

Le miroir se brisa en de nombreux petits morceaux.

The mirror broke into many small pieces.

Les morceaux s'envolèrent partout à travers le monde.

The pieces flew everywhere around the world.

C'est pourquoi tous les hommes possèdent un peu de sagesse.

This is why all people have some wisdom.

Chacun reçut un petit morceau du miroir magique.

Everyone got a small piece of the magic mirror.

Certaines personnes ont plus de sagesse, d'autres en ont moins, mais chacun en possède.

Some people have more wisdom, some have less, but everyone has some.

Et Anansi apprit que garder les bonnes choses pour soi n'est pas toujours la meilleure idée.

And Anansi learned that keeping good things for yourself is not always the best idea.

Parfois, partager rend le monde meilleur pour tous.

Sometimes sharing makes the world better for everyone.
