Dans le village vivait une vieille femme appelée la Gardienne de la Mémoire.

In the village lived an old woman called the Memory Keeper.

Elle se souvenait de toutes les histoires, chansons et sagesse du peuple.

She remembered all the stories, songs, and wisdom of the people.

Tout le monde venait la voir quand ils oubliaient quelque chose d'important.

Everyone came to her when they forgot something important.

Anansi observait la vieille femme chaque jour.

Anansi watched the old woman every day.

Il vit comme les gens l'aimaient et la respectaient.

He saw how people loved and respected her.

Il devint jaloux.

He became jealous.

« C'est moi qui devrais avoir tous les souvenirs, »

"I should be the one with all the memories,"

pensa-t-il.

Alors tout le monde viendra à moi.

Une nuit, Anansi se rendit chez le Gardien de la Mémoire.

One night, Anansi went to the Memory Keeper's house.

Il trouva un pot spécial où elle gardait tous les souvenirs.

He found a special pot where she kept all the memories.

Le pot brillait d'une douce lumière.

The pot glowed with a soft light.

Anansi prit le pot et s'enfuit.

Anansi took the pot and ran away.

"Maintenant j'ai toute la connaissance !"

"Now I have all the knowledge!"

dit Anansi joyeusement.

Anansi said happily.

« Je serai la personne la plus importante du village. »

"I will be the most important person in the village."

Mais le pot était très lourd.

But the pot was very heavy.

Anansi décida de le cacher au sommet d'un grand arbre.

Anansi decided to hide it at the top of a tall tree.

Il attacha le pot à son ventre et commença à grimper.

He tied the pot to his belly and started to climb.

Le pot ne cessait de heurter l'arbre.

The pot kept hitting the tree.

L'escalade était très difficile.

Climbing was very difficult.

Un petit garçon passa par là et vit Anansi en difficulté.

A small boy walked by and saw Anansi struggling.

« Oncle Anansi, »

"Uncle Anansi,"

dit le garçon,

the boy said,

« pourquoi ne pas attacher le pot à ton dos ? »

"why don't you tie the pot to your back?"

Ce sera plus facile de grimper.

"It will be easier to climb."

Anansi s'arrêta de grimper.

Anansi stopped climbing.

Le garçon avait raison !

The boy was right!

Mais alors Anansi se sentit très sot.

But then Anansi felt very foolish.

Il avait volé toute la sagesse, mais un petit enfant était plus malin que lui.

He had stolen all the wisdom, but a small child was smarter than him.

Anansi devint si furieux et humilié qu'il jeta le pot à terre.

Anansi became so angry and embarrassed that he threw the pot down.

Il se brisa en mille morceaux.

It broke into many pieces.

Tous les souvenirs s'envolèrent comme des papillons et se répandirent partout.

All the memories flew out like butterflies and spread everywhere.

Les souvenirs se rendirent auprès de tous les habitants du village.

Maintenant, chacun possédait un peu de sagesse et de connaissance.

Le Gardien de la Mémoire n'était pas en colère.

The Memory Keeper was not angry.

Elle sourit et dit,

La connaissance appartient à tous, pas seulement à une seule personne.

Anansi apprit que l'avidité ne lui apportait que des ennuis.

Et c'est pourquoi aujourd'hui, aucune personne ne sait tout.
