Il y a très longtemps, Anansi l'araignée avait très faim.

Long ago, Anansi the spider was very hungry.

Il n'avait aucune nourriture chez lui.

He had no food at home.

Il se promenait en cherchant quelque chose à manger.

He walked around looking for something to eat.

Anansi vit une grande rivière.

Anansi saw a big river.

Dans la rivière, il vit de nombreuses écrevisses grasses qui nageaient.

In the river, he saw many fat crayfish swimming.

Sa bouche se mit à saliver.

His mouth started to water.

Ces écrevisses ont l'air si délicieuses !

"Those crayfish look so good!"

dit-il.

he said.

Mais Anansi ne savait pas nager.

But Anansi could not swim.

Il avait peur de l'eau.

He was afraid of the water.

Il s'assit au bord de la rivière et réfléchit intensément.

He sat by the river and thought hard.

« Comment puis-je attraper ces écrevisses ? »

"How can I catch those crayfish?"

se demanda-t-il.

Alors Anansi eut une idée.

Then Anansi had an idea.

Il était très malin, mais aussi très avide.

He was very clever, but also very greedy.

Il courut chez lui et prit une grosse corde.

He ran home and got a big rope.

Il attacha une extrémité de la corde autour de sa jambe.

He tied one end of the rope around his leg.

Il attacha l'autre extrémité à un arbre près de la rivière.

He tied the other end to a tree near the river.

« Maintenant je peux aller dans l'eau, »

"Now I can go into the water,"

dit Anansi.

Anansi said.

« Si j'ai des ennuis, la corde me ramènera à terre. »

"If I get in trouble, the rope will pull me back to land."

Anansi entra lentement dans la rivière.

Anansi walked into the river slowly.

L'eau était froide.

The water was cold.

Il tendit la main vers l'écrevisse avec ses longues pattes d'araignée.

He reached for the crayfish with his long spider legs.

L'écrevisse semblait facile à attraper.

The crayfish looked easy to catch.

Mais les écrevisses n'étaient pas du tout faciles à attraper !

But the crayfish were not easy to catch at all!

Elles étaient très rapides.

They were very fast.

Ils s'éloignèrent d'Anansi à la nage rapidement.

They swam away from Anansi quickly.

Anansi tenta de les attraper, mais ils s'échappèrent à chaque fois.

Anansi tried to grab them, but they escaped every time.

Anansi se mit en colère.

Anansi got angry.

Il désirait ardemment ces écrevisses.

He wanted those crayfish very much.

Il s'enfonça plus profondément dans l'eau.

He went deeper into the water.

Il oublia d'être prudent.

He forgot about being careful.

Il oublia le danger.

He forgot about the danger.

L'eau devenait de plus en plus profonde.

The water got deeper and deeper.

Bientôt, Anansi ne put plus toucher le fond de la rivière.

Soon, Anansi could not touch the bottom of the river.

Il commença à paniquer.

He started to panic.

Au secours !

"Help!"

"Au secours !"

"Help!"

cria-t-il.

he cried.

Anansi tenta de nager pour revenir, mais il n'était pas un bon nageur.

Anansi tried to swim back, but he was not a good swimmer.

La corde autour de sa jambe était trop lâche.

The rope around his leg was too loose.

Cela ne l'aida pas.

It did not help him.

Le courant était fort.

The current was strong.

Elle l'éloigna du rivage.

It pushed him away from the shore.

Juste à ce moment-là, une vieille tortue sage passa en nageant.

Just then, a wise old turtle swam by.

La tortue vit Anansi en difficulté.

The turtle saw Anansi in trouble.

« Que fais-tu dans les eaux profondes, Anansi ? »

"What are you doing in the deep water, Anansi?"

demanda la tortue.

asked the turtle.

« Je voulais attraper des écrevisses, »

"I wanted to catch crayfish,"

dit Anansi.

Anansi said.

« Mais maintenant je ne peux plus regagner la terre ! »

"But now I cannot get back to land!"

La tortue secoua la tête.

The turtle shook his head.

« Tu étais avide, Anansi. »

"You were greedy, Anansi."

Tu voulais quelque chose qui ne t'était pas destiné.

"You wanted something that was not meant for you."

Les araignées appartiennent à la terre, pas à l'eau.

"Spiders belong on land, not in water."

La tortue bienveillante aida Anansi à regagner la rive.

The kind turtle helped Anansi get back to shore.

Anansi était mouillé et avait froid.

Anansi was wet and cold.

Il n'avait pas d'écrevisses.

He had no crayfish.

Il avait encore faim.

He was still hungry.

« Merci, tortue, »

"Thank you, turtle,"

dit Anansi.

said Anansi.

« J'ai appris quelque chose aujourd'hui. »

"I learned something today."

Qu'avez-vous appris ?

"What did you learn?"

demanda la tortue.

asked the turtle.

« J'ai appris qu'être avide peut être dangereux »

"I learned that being greedy can be dangerous,"

dit Anansi.

Anansi said.

« Je devrais être content de ce que j'ai. »

"I should be happy with what I have."

Je ne devrais pas essayer de prendre des choses qui ne me sont pas destinées.

"I should not try to take things that are not for me."

À partir de ce jour-là, Anansi se tint à l'écart de la rivière.

From that day on, Anansi stayed away from the river.

Il trouva sa nourriture sur la terre ferme, là où appartiennent les araignées.

He found food on land, where spiders belong.

Il n'était plus aussi avide qu'avant.

He was not as greedy as before.

Parfois il désirait encore des choses qu'il ne pouvait avoir, mais il se souvenait de la leçon de la rivière.

Sometimes he still wanted things he could not have, but he remembered the lesson from the river.

Et l'écrevisse ?

And the crayfish?

Elles nagent toujours joyeusement dans la rivière, à l'abri des araignées voraces.

They still swim happily in the river, safe from greedy spiders.
