Il y a longtemps, vivait une araignée nommée Anansi.

Long ago, there lived a spider named Anansi.

Il était très rusé mais aussi très avide.

He was very clever but also very greedy.

Un jour, Anansi découvrit un arbre magique.

One day, Anansi found a magic tree.

Cet arbre contenait toute la sagesse du monde.

This tree had all the wisdom in the world.

Anansi voulait toute la sagesse pour lui seul.

Anansi wanted all the wisdom for himself.

« Je prendrai toute cette sagesse, »

"I will take all this wisdom,"

dit Anansi.

said Anansi.

« Alors je serai la personne la plus intelligente du monde. »

"Then I will be the smartest person in the world."

Anansi mit toute la sagesse dans un grand pot.

Anansi put all the wisdom into a big pot.

Il attacha le pot à son ventre avec une corde.

He tied the pot to his stomach with a rope.

Puis il essaya de grimper à l'arbre pour cacher le pot au sommet.

Then he tried to climb the tree to hide the pot at the top.

Mais le pot était gros et lourd.

But the pot was big and heavy.

Il n'arrêtait pas de heurter l'arbre.

It kept hitting the tree.

Anansi ne pouvait pas grimper. Son jeune fils regardait.

Anansi could not climb up. His young son was watching.

« Père, »

"Father,"

dit le garçon,

said the boy,

« pourquoi n'attaches-tu pas le pot à ton dos ? »

"why don't you tie the pot to your back?"

Ainsi tu pourras grimper facilement.

"Then you can climb easily."

Anansi s'arrêta.

Anansi stopped.

Son fils avait raison !

His son was right!

L'idée du garçon était très astucieuse.

pensa Anansi.
