Un jour, Anansi leva les yeux vers le ciel.

« Je veux épouser la fille de la Lune, »

Anansi échafauda un plan.

Cette nuit-là, Anansi grimpa jusqu'au ciel.

Il utilisa sa toile d'araignée pour monter de plus en plus haut.

He used his spider web to go higher and higher.

Finalement, il atteignit la lune.

Finally, he reached the moon.

La Lune vit Anansi arriver.

The Moon saw Anansi coming.

« Que veux-tu ? »

"What do you want?"

demanda la Lune.

« Je veux épouser votre fille »,

"I want to marry your daughter,"

dit Anansi.

La fille de la Lune était la plus belle femme qu'Anansi eût jamais vue.

Sa peau était éclatante comme le clair de lune.

Her skin was bright like moonlight.

Ses cheveux étaient longs et argentés.

Her hair was long and silver.

Au début, Anansi fut très gentil avec sa nouvelle épouse.

At first, Anansi was very kind to his new wife.

Mais bientôt, il redevint avide.

But soon, he became greedy again.

Il voulait qu'elle travaille toute la journée.

He wanted her to work all day.

Il voulait qu'elle cuisine et nettoie et fabrique des choses qu'il pourrait vendre.

La fille de la Lune travaillait dur, mais Anansi n'était jamais satisfait.

The Moon's daughter worked hard, but Anansi was never happy.

« Travaille plus vite ! »

"Work faster!"

dit-il.

« Préparez plus de nourriture ! »

"Make more food!"

« Nettoie mieux ! »

"Clean better!"

Un jour, Anansi cria très fort après sa femme.

One day, Anansi shouted at his wife very loudly.

Tu es trop lente !

"You are too slow!"

"Tu es paresseux !"

"You are lazy!"

La fille de la Lune devint très triste et en colère.

The Moon's daughter became very sad and angry.

« Je ne peux plus rester ici »

"I cannot stay here anymore,"

dit-elle.

« Tu avais promis d'être bon, mais tu es méchant et cupide. »

"You promised to be kind, but you are mean and greedy."

Elle commença à rayonner d'une lumière éclatante.

She began to glow with bright light.

Lentement, elle commença à s'élever vers le ciel.

cria Anansi.

La fille de la Lune s'envola vers son père dans le ciel.

Anansi se retrouva seul avec rien.

Anansi was left alone with nothing.

À partir de ce jour, Anansi apprit que l'avarice et la méchanceté font perdre les bonnes choses de la vie.

From that day, Anansi learned that being greedy and mean makes you lose the good things in life.

Mais certains disent qu'il n'a jamais vraiment bien retenu cette leçon.
