He was very clever but also very greedy.

Anansi always wanted more things for himself.

Um dia, Anansi encontrou um espelho mágico na floresta.

One day, Anansi found a magic mirror in the forest.

The mirror was beautiful and shiny.

Quando olhou para ele, viu algo extraordinário.

When he looked into it, he saw something amazing.

O espelho mostrou-lhe toda a sabedoria do mundo.

The mirror showed him all the wisdom in the world.

"Isto é maravilhoso!"

"This is wonderful!"

disse Anansi.

said Anansi.

"Agora serei a pessoa mais inteligente do mundo."

"Now I will be the smartest person in the world."

"Mas devo manter este espelho seguro."

"But I must keep this mirror safe."

"Não quero que mais ninguém o use."

"I don't want anyone else to use it."

Anansi decidiu esconder o espelho no topo de uma árvore alta.

Anansi decided to hide the mirror at the top of a tall tree.

Ele amarrou o espelho ao peito com uma corda.

He tied the mirror to his chest with rope.

Então ele começou a subir na árvore.

Then he started to climb the tree.

Mas subir era muito difícil com o espelho no peito.

But climbing was very hard with the mirror on his chest.

Anansi continuava escorregando para baixo.

Anansi kept slipping down.

Ele tentou muitas vezes, mas não conseguiu alcançar o topo.

He tried many times but could not reach the top.

Um menino pequeno estava observando Anansi.

A small boy was watching Anansi.

O menino disse,

The boy said,

"Por que você não amarra o espelho nas suas costas?"

"Why don't you tie the mirror to your back?"

"Assim você pode escalar melhor."

"Then you can climb better."

Anansi parou de subir.

Anansi stopped climbing.

Ele se sentiu muito surpreso e envergonhado.

He felt very surprised and embarrassed.

Here he was, trying to keep all the wisdom for himself, but a small child was smarter than him.

Anansi desceu da árvore.

Anansi climbed down the tree.

He took the magic mirror and threw it on the ground.

The mirror broke into many small pieces.

Some people have more wisdom, some have less, but everyone has some.
