Люди страждали без вогню, та кмітливий Анансі злетів до небесного бога, викрав іскорку й подарував її людству.
Колись давно люди зовсім не мали вогню.
Long ago, people had no fire.
Вони їли холодну їжу й сиділи в темряві, щойно заходило сонце.
They ate cold food and sat in the dark when the sun went down.
Від цього вони дуже сумували.
They were very sad.
Але небесний бог мав вогонь.
But the Sky God had fire.
Він тримав його високо в небі.
He kept it high up in the sky.
Він не хотів ділитися ним із людьми.
He did not want to share it with people.
Анансі був кмітливим павуком.
Anansi was a clever spider.
Він бачив, що людям холодно й голодно.
He saw that people were cold and hungry.
Він хотів їм допомогти.
He wanted to help them.
Анансі вигадав план.
Anansi thought of a plan.
Він сплів довгу й міцну павутину аж до неба.
He spun a long, strong web up to the sky.
Він дерся все вище, доки не дістався оселі небесного бога.
He climbed up and up until he reached the Sky God's home.
Небесного бога не було вдома.
The Sky God was not there.
Анансі побачив, як яскраво палає вогонь.
Anansi saw the bright fire burning.
Він швидко взяв маленьку іскорку й поклав її до глиняного горщика.
He quickly took a small piece of fire and put it in a clay pot.
Анансі дуже обережно спускався своєю павутиною.
Anansi climbed down his web very carefully.
Він не хотів упустити вогонь.
He did not want to drop the fire.
Щойно він торкнувся землі, одразу віддав вогонь людям.
When he reached the ground, he gave the fire to the people.
Люди були безмежно щасливі!
The people were so happy!
Тепер вони могли готувати їжу.
Now they could cook their food.
Вони могли робити світло в темряві.
They could make light in the dark.
Вони могли зігріватися.
They could stay warm.
Коли небесний бог дізнався про це, він розлютився.
The Sky God was angry when he found out.
Але вже було запізно.
But it was too late.
Люди мали вогонь і більше не віддадуть його.
The people had fire, and they would never give it back.

From that day on, people have had fire.
