The Four Oxen and the Lion
Чотири воли живуть дружно й тримаються разом, доки хитрий лев не посіває між ними недовіру, доводячи, що єдність — найкращий захист.
Чотири воли жили на лузі.
Four oxen lived in a field.
Вони були найкращими друзями.
They were best friends.
Завжди трималися разом.
They always stayed together.
Разом паслися.
They ate grass together.
Разом ходили.
They walked together.
Разом спали.
They slept together.
Неподалік жив голодний лев.
A hungry lion lived near the field.
Він хотів з’їсти волів.
He wanted to eat the oxen.
Але четверо волів завжди стояли поруч.
But the four oxen always stood close together.
Коли лев наближався, вони наставляли роги в його бік.
When the lion came near, they pointed their horns at him.
Лев боявся їхніх гострих рогів.
The lion was afraid of their sharp horns.
Він не міг спіймати жодного.
He could not catch any of them.
Лев був дуже хитрий.
The lion was very smart.
У нього з’явився план.
He had a plan.
Він підходив до кожного вола, коли інших не було.
He went to each ox when the others were not there.
Він брехав кожному волові про інших.
He told lies to each ox about the other oxen.
«Твої друзі говорять про тебе погано»,
"Your friends say bad things about you,"
— сказав лев першому волові.
the lion said to the first ox.
«Вони тебе не люблять»,
"They do not like you,"
— сказав він другому.
he told the second ox.
«Вони сміються з тебе»,
"They laugh at you,"

"They want to leave you,"
— сказав четвертому. Воли повірили брехні лева.
he told the fourth ox. The oxen believed the lion's lies.
Вони розсердилися одне на одного.
They became angry with each other.
Перестали розмовляти.
They stopped talking.
Перестали їсти разом.
They stopped eating together.
Розійшлися різними частинами лугу.
They went to different parts of the field.
Тепер кожен віл залишився сам.
Now the oxen were alone.
Лев дуже зрадів.
The lion was very happy.
Він підійшов до першого вола.
He went to the first ox.
Віл був сам.
The ox was alone.
У нього не було друзів, щоб допомогти.
He had no friends to help him.
Лев легко його спіймав.
The lion caught him easily.
Потім лев упіймав другого вола.
Then the lion caught the second ox.
Потім третього.
Then the third ox.
Потім четвертого.
Then the fourth ox.
Він схопив їх усіх, бо вони залишилися самі.
He caught them all because they were alone.
Воли надто пізно зрозуміли: щоб бути в безпеці, друзям треба триматися разом.
The oxen learned too late that friends must stay together to be safe.
