The Frog and the Mouse
Нехитра історія про довірливу мишку й підступну жабу, що вчить: не поспішай довіряти та завжди обмірковуй наслідки чужих пропозицій.
Біля великого ставка жила жаба.
A frog lived by a big pond.
Поблизу ставка жила й мишка.
A mouse lived near the pond too.
Вони були сусідами.
They were neighbors.
Якось жаба сказала мишці: «Привіт, друже!»
One day, the frog said to the mouse, "Hello, friend!
«Хочеш поплавати зі мною?» — запитала вона. Мишка відповіла: «Я не дуже добре плаваю.
Do you want to swim with me?" The mouse said, "I cannot swim very well.
Я боюся води».
I am scared of the water."
«Не хвилюйся», — сказала жаба.
"Don't worry," said the frog.
«Я тобі допоможу».
"I will help you.
«Я прив’яжу шнурок до твоєї лапки й до своєї».
I will tie a string around your leg and around my leg.
«Тоді ми попливемо разом».
Then we will swim together.
«І ти будеш у безпеці».
You will be safe."
Мишка вирішила, що це гарна ідея.
The mouse thought this was a good idea.
Жаба прив’язала шнурок до мишачої лапки й до своєї.
The frog tied a string around the mouse's leg and around his own leg.
Вони зайшли у воду.
They went into the water.
Спершу мишка була рада.
At first, the mouse was happy.
Жаба допомагала їй триматися на поверхні води.
The frog helped him swim on top of the water.
Але потім жаба вигадала поганий план.
But then the frog had a bad idea.
Вона захотіла з’їсти мишку!
He wanted to eat the mouse!
Жаба пірнула глибоко під воду.
The frog went down deep into the water.
Мишка не могла дихати.
The mouse could not breathe.
Мишка дуже злякалася.
The mouse was very scared.
«Допоможи мені!» — закричала мишка.
"Help me!" cried the mouse.
«Я не можу плисти так глибоко!» — та жаба її не слухала.
"I cannot swim down here!" But the frog did not listen.
Жаба тягнула мишку все глибше у воду.
He pulled the mouse deeper into the water.
Саме тоді над ставком пролетів великий птах.
Just then, a big bird flew over the pond.
Птах був дуже голодний.
The bird was very hungry.
Він побачив у воді мишку.
He saw the mouse in the water.
Птах стрімко спікірував донизу.
The bird flew down fast.
Він схопив мишку своїми кігтями.
He caught the mouse with his claws.
Але жаба все ще була прив’язана до неї!
But the frog was still tied to the mouse!
Птах підхопив і мишку, і жабу.
The bird caught both the mouse and the frog.
Птах полетів геть із обома тваринами.
The bird flew away with both animals.
Він з’їв їх обох на вечерю.
He ate them both for dinner.
