A Waggoner was once driving a heavy load along a very muddy way.

Un giorno, un Carrettiere stava trasportando un carico pesante lungo un sentiero pieno di fango.

At last he came to a part of the road where the wheels sank half-way into the mire, and the more the horses pulled, the deeper sank the wheels.

Alla fine, giunse a un punto della strada in cui le ruote affondarono per metà nel pantano, e più i cavalli tiravano, più profondamente le ruote affondavano.

So the Waggoner threw down his whip, and knelt down and prayed to Hercules the Strong.

Così, il Carrettiere gettò via la sua frusta, e si inginocchiò per pregare il potente Ercole.

"O Hercules, help me in this my hour of distress," quoth he.

"Oh, Ercole, aiutami in quest'ora di bisogno," egli disse.

But Hercules appeared to him, and said:  "Tut, man, don't sprawl there.

Ma Ercole gli apparve e replicò: "Insomma, uomo, smetti di restare lì abbattuto.

Get up and put your shoulder to the wheel."
