C'era una volta un grande re di nome Teseo, il Duca di Atene.

Once upon a time, there was a great king named Theseus, the Duke of Athens.

He was a strong and brave man, known for his victories in battle.

Un giorno, Teseo tornò a casa ad Atene con sua moglie, la Regina Ippolita, e sua sorella, Emelye.

One day, Theseus returned home to Athens with his wife, Queen Hippolyta, and her sister, Emelye.

Durante il cammino, incontrarono un gruppo di donne che piangevano e vestite di nero.

On their way, they met a group of women crying and dressed in black.

Queste donne dissero a Teseo che i loro mariti erano stati uccisi in guerra, e il crudele re Creonte di Tebe non permetteva loro di seppellire i corpi.

These women told Theseus that their husbands had been killed in a war, and the cruel King Creon of Thebes would not allow them to bury the bodies.

Teseo provò pietà per le donne.

Theseus felt pity for the women.

One day, Palamon, sitting near the window, saw a beautiful young woman walking in the garden.

Lei era Emelye, sorella della Regina Ippolita.

She was Emelye, Queen Hippolyta’s sister.

Palamone se ne innamorò immediatamente.

Palamon immediately fell in love with her.

Lui disse: "Oh, è così bella!"

He said, “Oh, she is so beautiful!

Deve essere una dea!" Arcite sentì le parole di Palamone.

She must be a goddess!” Arcite heard Palamon’s words.

Anche lui andò a guardare fuori dalla finestra e vide Emelye.

He also went to look out of the window and saw Emelye.

Palamon said to Arcite, “You are my cousin and my friend, but how can we both love the same woman?

One day, a friend of Arcite came to Athens.

Parlò a Teseo e lo convinse a liberare Arcita dalla prigione.

He spoke to Theseus and convinced him to release Arcite from the prison.

Teseo acconsentì, ma a una condizione: Arcita doveva lasciare Atene e non tornare mai più.

Theseus agreed, but on one condition: Arcite had to leave Athens and never return.

Se Arcite fosse trovato ad Atene, sarebbe stato ucciso.

If Arcite was found in Athens, he would be killed.

All'inizio, Arcite era felice di essere libero, ma presto divenne triste.

At first, Arcite was happy to be free, but soon he grew sad.

He thought, “What good is freedom if I cannot see Emelye?

He ran into the forest, planning to find a place to hide.

By chance, Arcite was also in the forest, walking alone.

The two knights saw each other.

Palamone disse: "Arcita!

Palamon said, “Arcite!

You have betrayed me.

You are in Athens, near Emelye, while I have suffered in prison.

Let us fight here and now.

Arcite acconsentì.

Arcite agreed.

I due cavalieri si prepararono a combattere.

The two knights prepared to fight.

Presero le loro spade e scudi e iniziarono il loro duello.

They picked up their swords and shields and began their duel.

Combatterono ferocemente, ma prima che uno potesse vincere, arrivò il Duca Teseo con sua moglie ed Emelye. Teseo fermò la lotta.

They fought fiercely, but before one could win, Duke Theseus arrived with his wife and Emelye. Theseus stopped the fight.

"Che cos'è questo?" chiese.

“What is this?” he asked.

"Perché state combattendo nella mia foresta?" Palamone spiegò tutto: la loro prigionia, il loro amore per Emelye, e il loro duello.

“Why are you fighting in my forest?” Palamon explained everything: their imprisonment, their love for Emelye, and their duel.

Teseo fu commosso dalla loro storia.

Theseus was moved by their story.

Theseus sat on a high platform with Hippolyta and Emelye.

I due eserciti entrarono nel campo.

The two armies entered the field.

I cavalieri di Arcita indossavano il rosso, e i cavalieri di Palamone indossavano il bianco.

Arcite’s knights wore red, and Palamon’s knights wore white.

La battaglia iniziò.

The battle began.

Fu una battaglia feroce, con spade che si scontravano e scudi che si spezzavano.

It was a fierce fight, with swords clashing and shields breaking.

Entrambe le parti combatterono coraggiosamente, ma alla fine, la parte di Arcite vinse.

Both sides fought bravely, but in the end, Arcite’s side won.

Arcite fu dichiarato vincitore, e sembrava che avrebbe sposato Emelye. Ma mentre Arcite cavalcava il suo cavallo intorno all'arena in segno di vittoria, accadde una cosa strana.

Arcite was declared the victor, and it seemed he would marry Emelye. But as Arcite rode his horse around the arena in victory, a strange thing happened.

Suddenly, his horse stumbled, and Arcite fell to the ground.

He was badly injured.

The people rushed to help him, but it was clear that his injuries were fatal.

As he lay dying, Arcite spoke to Emelye.

Everyone was filled with sorrow, especially Theseus and Emelye. After some time, Theseus called Palamon and Emelye together.
