Once upon a time, there was a strong oak tree and some little reeds growing by a river.

The oak tree was tall and proud.
Guardò in basso verso le canne e disse: "Siete così piccole e deboli.
It looked down at the reeds and said, "You are so small and weak.
Quando soffia il vento, ti pieghi e ondeggi.
When the wind blows, you bend and sway.
Sono forte e sto in piedi a testa alta, qualunque cosa accada.
I am strong and stand tall no matter what."
Le canne risposero: "Sì, ci pieghiamo con il vento, ma è così che rimaniamo al sicuro."
The reeds replied, "Yes, we bend with the wind, but that is how we stay safe.
Sei forte, ma a volte essere flessibili è meglio che essere forti.
You are strong, but sometimes being flexible is better than being strong."
Un giorno, arrivò una grande tempesta.
One day, a big storm came.
Il vento soffiava molto forte.
The wind blew very hard.
La quercia cercò di stare eretta, ma il vento era troppo forte.
The oak tree tried to stand tall, but the wind was too strong.
La quercia si spezzò e cadde a terra.
The oak tree broke and fell to the ground.
Le canne, tuttavia, si piegarono con il vento e rimasero al sicuro.
The reeds, however, bent with the wind and stayed safe.
Quando la tempesta finì, le canne erano ancora in piedi, ma la quercia era spezzata.
When the storm was over, the reeds were still standing, but the oak tree was broken.
