Dąb i trzciny

Dawno, dawno temu był silny dąb i małe trzciny rosnące nad rzeką.

Once upon a time, there was a strong oak tree and some little reeds growing by a river.

Dąb był wysoki i dumny.

The oak tree was tall and proud.

Spojrzał w dół na trzciny i powiedział: "Jesteście takie małe i słabe.

It looked down at the reeds and said, "You are so small and weak.

Gdy wieje wiatr, ginacie się i kołyszecie.

When the wind blows, you bend and sway.

Ja jestem silny i stoję prosto bez względu na wszystko."

I am strong and stand tall no matter what."

Trzciny odpowiedziały: "Tak, gniemy się z wiatrem, ale dzięki temu jesteśmy bezpieczne.

The reeds replied, "Yes, we bend with the wind, but that is how we stay safe.

Jesteś silny, ale czasem bycie elastycznym jest lepsze niż bycie silnym."

You are strong, but sometimes being flexible is better than being strong."

Pewnego dnia nadeszła wielka burza.

One day, a big storm came.

Wiatr wiał bardzo mocno.

The wind blew very hard.

Dąb próbował stać prosto, ale wiatr był zbyt silny.

The oak tree tried to stand tall, but the wind was too strong.

Dąb złamał się i upadł na ziemię.

The oak tree broke and fell to the ground.

Trzciny jednak gięły się z wiatrem i pozostały bezpieczne.

The reeds, however, bent with the wind and stayed safe.

Gdy burza minęła, trzciny wciąż stały, ale dąb był złamany.

When the storm was over, the reeds were still standing, but the oak tree was broken.

Trzciny powiedziały: "Czasem lepiej jest trochę się ugiąć, niż próbować być zbyt silnym."

The reeds said, "Sometimes, it is better to bend a little than to try to be too strong."
