The two goats
У затишній долині дві кози сходяться на вузькому містку та змагаються, хто перейде першим. Їхня пригода показує, що ввічливість і терпіння важать більше, ніж впертість і суперечки.
Жили-були дві кози.
Once upon a time, there were two goats.
Вони мешкали по різні боки долини.
They lived on opposite sides of a valley.
Якось обидві захотіли перейти вузький місток над глибокою річкою.
One day, both goats wanted to cross a narrow bridge that went over a deep river.
Міст був такий тісний, що ним могла пройти лише одна коза за раз.
The bridge was so narrow that only one goat could cross at a time.
Перша коза рушила з одного берега.
The first goat started to cross the bridge from one side.
Одночасно друга коза ступила з протилежного боку.
At the same time, the second goat started to cross from the other side.
Зустрівшись посередині, вони зупинилися.
When they met in the middle, they both stopped.
Місця не вистачало, щоб розминутися.
There was not enough room for both of them to pass.
Кози почали сперечатися.
They started to argue.
«Я маю пройти першою!» — сказала перша коза.
"I should go first!" said the first goat.
«Ні, я маю йти першою!» — відповіла друга.
"No, I should go first!" said the second goat.
Вони штовхалися й пхалися, намагаючись пролізти одна повз одну.
They pushed and shoved, trying to get past each other.
Раптом обидві втратили рівновагу й звалилися в річку.
Suddenly, they both lost their balance and fell into the river below.
Течія була сильна, і кози насилу трималися на воді.
The current was strong, and they struggled to swim.
На щастя, добрі люди побачили це й витягли їх на берег.
Luckily, some kind people saw them and helped them out of the water.
Кози були живі, але мокрі й виснажені.
The goats were safe but very wet and tired.
Вони зрозуміли, що сварка й упертість довели їх до падіння.
They realized that their arguing had caused them to fall.
Тож вирішили надалі бути обережнішими й чемнішими.
They decided to be more careful and polite in the future.
Відтоді, зустрічаючись на містку, одна завжди поступалася дорогу іншій.
From that day on, whenever they met on the bridge, one would step aside and let the other pass first.
Так вони навчилися: краще бути добрим і терплячим, ніж штовхатися й сваритися.
They learned that it's better to be kind and patient than to push and argue.
