Оповідь лицаря

Колись давно жив великий цар Афін на ім’я Тесей.

Once upon a time, there was a great king named Theseus, the Duke of Athens.

Він був сильним і хоробрим чоловіком, знаний своїми перемогами у битвах.

He was a strong and brave man, known for his victories in battle.

Якось Тесей повертався до Афін зі своєю дружиною королевою Іполітою та її сестрою Емілією.

One day, Theseus returned home to Athens with his wife, Queen Hippolyta, and her sister, Emelye.

Дорогою вони зустріли гурт жінок, що плакали й були вдягнені в чорне.

On their way, they met a group of women crying and dressed in black.

Жінки розповіли Тесею, що їхніх чоловіків убили на війні, а жорстокий цар Фів Креон не дозволяє поховати тіла.

These women told Theseus that their husbands had been killed in a war, and the cruel King Creon of Thebes would not allow them to bury the bodies.

Тесей пожаліли жінок.

Theseus felt pity for the women.

Він пообіцяв їм допомогти.

He promised to help them.

Отож зібрав військо й вирушив до Фів.

So, he gathered his army and marched to Thebes.

Там він зійшовся в битві з царем Креоном і переміг його.

There, he fought King Creon and defeated him.

Після бою він дозволив жінкам поховати своїх чоловіків.

After the battle, he allowed the women to bury their husbands.

Під час битви Тесей знайшов двох юних лицарів, Арситу й Паламона, поранених на полі.

During the fight, Theseus found two young knights, Arcite and Palamon, who were wounded.

Вони були з Фів і воювали на боці Креона.

They were from Thebes and had fought for Creon.

Тесей узяв їх у полон і замкнув у вежі в Афінах.

Theseus took them as prisoners and locked them in a tower in Athens. The tower had a small window that looked out into a garden.

У вежі було невелике вікно, що виходило в сад.

One day, Palamon, sitting near the window, saw a beautiful young woman walking in the garden.

Одного дня Паламон, сидячи біля вікна, побачив у саду прекрасну молоду жінку.

She was Emelye, Queen Hippolyta’s sister.

Це була Емілія, сестра королеви Іполіти.

Palamon immediately fell in love with her.

Паламон одразу закохався в неї.

He said, “Oh, she is so beautiful!

«Вона ж точно богиня!» Ці слова почув Арсита.

She must be a goddess!” Arcite heard Palamon’s words.

«Вона повинна бути богинею!»

He also went to look out of the window and saw Emelye.

Арсита почув слова Паламона.

Arcite also fell in love with her.

Він також глянув у вікно й побачив Емілію.

But this caused a problem.

Арсита теж закохався в неї.

Both knights were now in love with the same woman.

Так постала проблема.

Palamon said to Arcite, “You are my cousin and my friend, but how can we both love the same woman?

Обидва лицарі закохалися в одну жінку.

This will destroy our friendship.”

Це зруйнує нашу дружбу».

Arcite replied, “I cannot help it.

Любов — не те, чим можна керувати.

Love is not something we can control.

Арсита відповів: «Я нічого не можу вдіяти.

But may the best man win her.”

Нехай найкращий здобуде її».

Years passed, and the two knights stayed in the tower.

Якось до Афін прибув друг Арсити.

One day, a friend of Arcite came to Athens.

Минали роки, а лицарі все ще сиділи у вежі.

He spoke to Theseus and convinced him to release Arcite from the prison.

Одного дня друг Арсити прибув до Афін.

Theseus agreed, but on one condition: Arcite had to leave Athens and never return.

Він поговорив із Тесеєм і переконав його звільнити Арситу.

If Arcite was found in Athens, he would be killed.

Якщо його спіймають у місті, його страчують.

At first, Arcite was happy to be free, but soon he grew sad.

Він думав: «Яка користь із волі, якщо я не можу бачити Емілію?»

He thought, “What good is freedom if I cannot see Emelye?

Спершу Арсита радів волі, та швидко засмутився.

Palamon may still look at her from the tower, but I cannot even come near her.”

Паламон і далі може дивитися на неї з вежі, а я не смію й наблизитися».

Palamon, still in prison, also felt sad.

Паламон журився: «Арсита вільний».

He thought, “Arcite is free.

Паламон, досі ув’язнений, теж страждав.

He can go anywhere and find a way to win Emelye’s love.

Він думав: «Арсита вільний.

But I am trapped here forever.”

А я навіки замкнений тут».

Meanwhile, Arcite came up with a plan.

Він переодягнувся слугою й повернувся до Афін.

He disguised himself as a servant and returned to Athens.

Тим часом Арсита вигадав план.

He got a job working in Theseus’s household, and nobody recognized him.

Він влаштувався працювати в домі Тесея, і ніхто його не впізнав.

Arcite’s only wish was to be near Emelye. One spring day, Palamon escaped from the tower.

Він утік до лісу, шукаючи місце, де можна сховатися.

He ran into the forest, planning to find a place to hide.

Єдине бажання Арсити було — бути поруч із Емілією.

By chance, Arcite was also in the forest, walking alone.

Двоє лицарів натрапили один на одного.

The two knights saw each other.

Одного весняного дня Паламон утік із вежі.

Palamon said, “Arcite!

Він побіг до лісу, сподіваючись сховатися.

You have betrayed me.

Випадково Арсита того ж дня гуляв у лісі наодинці.

You are in Athens, near Emelye, while I have suffered in prison.

Лицарі побачили одне одного.

Let us fight here and now.

Паламон вигукнув: «Арсито!

Only one of us will live to love her.”

Ти в Афінах поруч із Емілією, а я мучився в темниці.

Arcite agreed.

Биймося просто зараз.

The two knights prepared to fight.

Лише один із нас житиме, щоб любити її».

They picked up their swords and shields and began their duel.

Арсита погодився.

They fought fiercely, but before one could win, Duke Theseus arrived with his wife and Emelye. Theseus stopped the fight.

Лицарі приготувалися до бою.

“What is this?” he asked.

«Чому ви б’єтеся в моєму лісі?» Паламон розповів усе: про полон, любов до Емілії та їхній поєдинок.

“Why are you fighting in my forest?” Palamon explained everything: their imprisonment, their love for Emelye, and their duel.

Вони билися люто, але перш ніж хтось переміг, до лісу прибув герцог Тесей зі своєю дружиною та Емілією.

Theseus was moved by their story.

Спершу Тесей хотів покарати їх обох.

At first, he wanted to punish them both.

Тесей зупинив бій.

But then, Queen Hippolyta and Emelye asked him to forgive the knights.

Тесей трохи поміркував і мовив: «Гаразд.

Theseus thought for a moment and said, “Very well.

«Чому ви б’єтеся в моєму лісі?»

I will not punish you.

Але ми вирішимо це по-чесному».

But we will settle this matter fairly.

Паламон розповів усе: про полон, про їхню любов до Емілії та про двобій.

In one year, you will return to Athens with one hundred knights each.

Спершу він хотів покарати обох.

You will fight in a grand tournament, and the winner will marry Emelye.” The knights agreed, and they left to prepare for the tournament.

Але королева Іполіта та Емілія попросили його помилувати лицарів.

Arcite went to Thebes to gather his knights, and Palamon did the same.

Протягом року вони старанно тренувалися й збирали свої війська.

Over the next year, they trained hard and built their armies.

Я не каратиму вас.

Finally, the day of the tournament arrived.

Але ми вирішимо це чесно.

The arena was filled with people.

За рік ви повернетеся до Афін, кожен зі своєю сотнею лицарів».

Theseus sat on a high platform with Hippolyta and Emelye.

Обидві армії вийшли на поле.

The two armies entered the field.

«Ви зійдетеся на великому турнірі, і переможець одружиться з Емілією».

Arcite’s knights wore red, and Palamon’s knights wore white.

Почався турнір.

The battle began.

Битва була лютою: мечі зіштовхувались, щити ламалися.

It was a fierce fight, with swords clashing and shields breaking.

Обидві сторони билися відважно, але зрештою перемогу здобула дружина Арсити.

Both sides fought bravely, but in the end, Arcite’s side won.

Арситу оголосили переможцем, і здавалося, що саме він одружиться з Емілією. Та коли Арсита на коні об’їжджав арену, сталося дивне.

Arcite was declared the victor, and it seemed he would marry Emelye. But as Arcite rode his horse around the arena in victory, a strange thing happened.

Раптом кінь спіткнувся, і Арсита впав на землю.

Suddenly, his horse stumbled, and Arcite fell to the ground.

Він тяжко поранився.

He was badly injured.

Люди кинулися на допомогу, але було зрозуміло, що рани смертельні.

The people rushed to help him, but it was clear that his injuries were fatal.

Лежачи при смерті, Арсита звернувся до Емілії.

As he lay dying, Arcite spoke to Emelye.

«Дорога пані, я завжди кохав тебе,» — сказав він.

He said, “Dear lady, I have always loved you.

«Та тепер мені слід полишити цей світ.

But now, I must leave this world.

Попроси бути доброю до Паламона.

I ask that you be kind to Palamon.

Він шляхетний чоловік і щиро тебе любить.

He is a good man and loves you truly.

Одружися з ним і будь щаслива».

Marry him and be happy.”

З цими словами Арсита помер.

With those words, Arcite died.

Усіх охопив смуток, особливо Тесея й Емілію. Минув час, і Тесей покликав Паламона та Емілію.

Everyone was filled with sorrow, especially Theseus and Emelye. After some time, Theseus called Palamon and Emelye together.

Він сказав: «Арсита хотів, щоб ви були разом, і я теж вважаю це правильним.

He said, “Arcite wanted you to be together, and I believe it is the right thing.

Паламон багато вистраждав заради свого кохання.

Palamon has suffered much for his love.

Еміліє, ти вийдеш за нього?» Емілія погодилася.

Emelye, will you marry him?” Emelye agreed.

З часом вона навчилася поважати й піклуватися про Паламона.

She had come to respect and care for Palamon over time.

Вони повінчалися на урочистій церемонії.

The two were married in a grand ceremony.

Хоча їм було сумно через Арситу, вони жили разом щасливо.

Though they were sad for Arcite, they lived happily together.

Так завершується «Оповідь лицаря» — історія про кохання, честь і долю.

And so ends the Knight’s Tale, a story of love, honor, and destiny.
