Shimmer's Journey to the Sky Kingdom

Maya loved balloons.

Maya adorava balões.

She had red ones, blue ones, and yellow ones in her room.

But her favorite balloon was special.

Mas o seu balão favorito era especial.

It was silver and shiny like a mirror.

This balloon was made of mylar, a special kind of plastic that never broke.

Maya got the balloon at her birthday party three weeks ago.

Maya ganhou o balão na sua festa de aniversário há três semanas.

All her other balloons were flat now, but the silver one still floated near her ceiling.

Every morning, Maya said "Good morning, Balloon!"

But something strange started happening.

On Wednesday, Maya found the balloon outside in the garden.

This was very strange because all the windows were closed.

Maya brought the balloon back to her room.

She tied the string to her desk with a big knot.

That night, Maya decided to watch the balloon.

She pretended to sleep but kept one eye open.

At midnight, something incredible happened.

The balloon began to glow with a soft, silver light.

Then Maya heard a tiny voice.

"Hello, Maya," the voice whispered.

Maya sat up in bed.

"It's me, your balloon," the voice said.

"My name is Shimmer."

Maya could not believe it.

"Balloons cannot talk!"

"Special balloons can," Shimmer explained.

"I have been trying to tell you something important."

"What do you want to tell me?"

"O que você quer me dizer?"

Maya asked.

"I am not from your world," Shimmer said.

"Eu não sou do seu mundo," disse Shimmer.

"I come from the Sky Kingdom, where all balloons are born.

"Eu venho do Reino Celestial, onde todos os balões nascem."

But I got lost during a big storm.

Mas me perdi durante uma grande tempestade.

I have been looking for my way home."

Tenho estado à procura do caminho para casa.

Maya felt sad for her balloon friend.

Maya sentiu pena do seu amigo balão.

"How can I help you?"

"Tomorrow night, there will be a full moon," Shimmer said.

"Amanhã à noite, haverá lua cheia," disse Shimmer.

"If you take me to the highest hill in your town and let me go, I can fly home to the Sky Kingdom."

"Se você me levar até a colina mais alta da sua cidade e me soltar, eu posso voar para casa, para o Reino do Céu."

Maya thought about this.

She loved Shimmer, but she wanted to help her friend.

The next evening, Maya and her parents climbed the big hill outside their town.

Maya held Shimmer's string tightly.

Sometimes, on clear nights, Maya looks up at the sky and sees a tiny silver light twinkling.
