Shimmer's Journey to the Sky Kingdom

Maya loved balloons.

Maya liebte Luftballons.

She had red ones, blue ones, and yellow ones in her room.

Sie hatte rote, blaue und gelbe in ihrem Zimmer.

But her favorite balloon was special.

Aber ihr Lieblingsballon war etwas Besonderes.

It was silver and shiny like a mirror.

This balloon was made of mylar, a special kind of plastic that never broke.

Maya got the balloon at her birthday party three weeks ago.

All her other balloons were flat now, but the silver one still floated near her ceiling.

Every morning, Maya said "Good morning, Balloon!"

On Wednesday, Maya found the balloon outside in the garden.

This was very strange because all the windows were closed.

Maya brought the balloon back to her room.

She tied the string to her desk with a big knot.

Thursday morning came.

Maya opened her eyes and screamed.

The balloon was floating right above her face!

The string was still tied to the desk, but somehow the balloon had moved.

Maya called.

But when her parents came, the balloon was back in its normal place.

"My name is Shimmer."

Maya could not believe it.

"Special balloons can," Shimmer explained.

"I have been trying to tell you something important."

"What do you want to tell me?"

Maya asked.

"I am not from your world," Shimmer said.

"Ich bin nicht aus eurer Welt", sagte Shimmer.

"I come from the Sky Kingdom, where all balloons are born.

"Ich komme aus dem Himmelreich, wo alle Ballons geboren werden."

But I got lost during a big storm.

Aber ich habe mich während eines großen Sturms verirrt.

I have been looking for my way home."

Ich suche schon die ganze Zeit nach dem Weg nach Hause.

Maya felt sad for her balloon friend.

Maya war traurig um ihren Ballonfreund.

"How can I help you?"

"Tomorrow night, there will be a full moon," Shimmer said.

"If you take me to the highest hill in your town and let me go, I can fly home to the Sky Kingdom."

Maya thought about this.

She loved Shimmer, but she wanted to help her friend.

The next evening, Maya and her parents climbed the big hill outside their town.

Maya held Shimmer's string tightly.

"Are you ready?"

Maya asked.

"Thank you for being my friend."

Maya let go of the string.

Shimmer floated up, up, up into the moonlight until she disappeared among the stars.

Shimmer schwebte hinauf, hinauf, hinauf ins Mondlicht, bis sie zwischen den Sternen verschwand.

Sometimes, on clear nights, Maya looks up at the sky and sees a tiny silver light twinkling.

She waves and whispers, "Hello, Shimmer."
