Maya and Tom Watch the Sky

Maya loved to look at the stars.

Maya aimait regarder les étoiles.

Every night, she sat on her roof with her old telescope.

Chaque soir, elle s'asseyait sur son toit avec son vieux télescope.

She lived in a small town where the sky was dark and clear.

Elle vivait dans une petite ville où le ciel était sombre et dégagé.

The stars looked like tiny diamonds.

Les étoiles ressemblaient à de minuscules diamants.

One Tuesday night, Maya saw something strange.

Un mardi soir, Maya vit quelque chose d'étrange.

A bright light moved across the sky.

Une lumière vive traversa le ciel.

It was not a plane.

Ce n'était pas un avion.

Planes have blinking lights and make noise.

Les avions ont des feux clignotants et font du bruit.

This light was silent and very fast.

Cette lumière était silencieuse et très rapide.

"Mom, come quick!"

Maman, viens vite !

Maya called.

appela Maya.

Her mother climbed onto the roof.

Sa mère est montée sur le toit.

"What is it, Maya?"

Qu'est-ce qu'il y a, Maya ?

"Look!

Regarde !

That light is moving in a circle.

Cette lumière bouge en cercle.

Planes cannot do that."

Les avions ne peuvent pas faire ça.

They watched together.

Ils ont regardé ensemble.

The light stopped moving.

La lumière s'arrêta de bouger.

Then it went up and down very fast.

Puis elle monta et descendit très rapidement.

Then it disappeared.

Puis elle a disparu.

"That was unusual," said Maya's mother.

« C'était inhabituel », dit la mère de Maya.

"Maybe it was a helicopter."

« C'était peut-être un hélicoptère. »

But Maya knew it was not a helicopter.

Mais Maya savait que ce n'était pas un hélicoptère.

Helicopters are loud and slow.

Les hélicoptères sont bruyants et lents.

The next day at school, Maya told her friend Tom about the strange light.

Le lendemain à l'école, Maya raconta à son ami Tom l'histoire de cette étrange lumière.

"I saw something too!"

Moi aussi, j'ai vu quelque chose !

said Tom.

"Last week, I was fishing with my dad at the lake.

« La semaine dernière, j'étais à la pêche avec mon père au lac.

We saw three orange lights in a triangle shape.

Nous avons vu trois lumières oranges disposées en triangle.

They flew over the water without making any sound."

Ils ont survolé l'eau sans faire aucun bruit.

Maya was excited.

Maya était excitée.

"Did you take a picture?"

As-tu pris une photo ?

"I tried, but the lights were too bright.

J'ai essayé, mais les lumières étaient trop vives.

My phone could not take a good picture."

Mon téléphone n'a pas pu prendre une bonne photo.

Maya and Tom decided to watch the sky together.

Maya et Tom décidèrent de regarder le ciel ensemble.

They met at the park with blankets and snacks.

Maya brought her telescope.

At nine o'clock, they saw it.

A silver object shaped like a disk flew slowly above the trees.

It had colorful lights around the edges - red, blue, green, and yellow.

The lights blinked in a pattern.

"Are you seeing this?"

Tu vois ça ?

whispered Tom.

"Yes!

« Oui !

It looks like a flying dinner plate," said Maya.

« On dirait une assiette volante », dit Maya.

The disk stopped above the playground.

Le disque s'arrêta au-dessus de la cour de récréation.

It made a soft humming sound, like a refrigerator.

Il émettait un doux bourdonnement, comme un réfrigérateur.

Then a bright white light came down from the bottom of the disk.

Puis une lumière blanche et vive descendit du dessous du disque.

Maya looked through her telescope.

Maya regarda dans son télescope.

She could see the disk very clearly.

It had a smooth surface that looked like metal.

Il avait une surface lisse qui ressemblait à du métal.

There were no windows.

Il n'y avait pas de fenêtres.

Suddenly, the white light turned off.

Soudain, la lumière blanche s'éteignit.

The disk spun around three times very fast.

Le disque tourna trois fois très rapidement sur lui-même.

Then it shot up into the sky and vanished among the stars.

Puis il s'élança dans le ciel et disparut parmi les étoiles.

Maya and Tom sat quietly for a long time.

Maya et Tom restèrent assis en silence pendant longtemps.

"What do you think it was?"

Qu'est-ce que tu penses que c'était ?

asked Tom.

demanda Tom.

"I think it was a UFO," said Maya.

« Je pense que c'était un OVNI », dit Maya.

"UFO means Unidentified Flying Object.

OVNI signifie Objet Volant Non Identifié.

Nobody knows what they are or where they come from."

Personne ne sait ce que c'est ni d'où ça vient.

"Do you think there were aliens inside?"

Tu crois qu'il y avait des extraterrestres à l'intérieur ?

"Maybe," said Maya.

« Peut-être », dit Maya.

"Or maybe it was a secret airplane from the government.

« Ou peut-être que c'était un avion secret du gouvernement. »

Or maybe it was something else completely different."

Ou peut-être que c'était quelque chose de complètement différent.

Tom nodded.

Tom hocha la tête.

"Should we tell someone?"

« On devrait prévenir quelqu'un ? »

Maya thought about this.

Maya réfléchit à cette question.

"Who would believe us?

Qui nous croirait ?

Adults always say we have big imaginations."

Les adultes disent toujours qu'on a beaucoup d'imagination.

They decided to keep watching the sky.

Ils décidèrent de continuer à observer le ciel.

Maybe they would see the mysterious disk again.

Peut-être reverraient-ils le disque mystérieux.

Maybe they would learn its secret.

Peut-être découvriraient-ils son secret.

From that night on, Maya and Tom became sky watchers.

À partir de cette nuit-là, Maya et Tom devinrent des observateurs du ciel.

They saw many strange things - lights that danced, objects that changed shape, and flying things that moved too fast for earthly machines.

Ils virent de nombreuses choses étranges - des lumières qui dansaient, des objets qui changeaient de forme, et des choses volantes qui se déplaçaient trop vite pour des machines terrestres.

The mystery continued, and so did their friendship.

Le mystère perdura, et leur amitié aussi.
