Fire Falls from the Siberian Sky

Masha was a young girl who lived in a small village in Siberia.

Masha era uma jovem que vivia numa pequena aldeia na Sibéria.

She loved to watch the sky and dream about the stars.

Ela adorava observar o céu e sonhar com as estrelas.

Every night, she looked up at the moon and made wishes.

One morning in June 1908, something very strange happened.

Masha woke up early to help her grandmother feed the chickens.

The sun was just coming up.

Suddenly, the sky became very bright.

Masha looked up and saw a huge ball of fire moving across the sky.

It was bigger than anything she had ever seen.

The fireball was white and blue and orange.

It moved very fast.

"Grandmother!"

Masha called.

"Come quickly!

Look at the sky!"

Her grandmother ran outside.

She had never seen anything like this before.

Other people in the village came out of their houses.

Everyone pointed at the strange light in the sky.

The fireball moved across the sky for many seconds.

Then it disappeared behind the trees in the forest.

For a moment, everything was quiet.

The birds stopped singing.

Then came the loudest sound Masha had ever heard.

The ground shook under her feet.

The windows in her house broke.

The chickens ran everywhere.

Her grandmother fell down.

"What is happening?"

It was so strong that it knocked down trees.

We call these space rocks meteors."

The man explained that the meteor was very big.

When it hit the Earth's air, it got very hot.

It exploded high above the forest.

The explosion was so powerful that it knocked down millions of trees.

It was like many bombs exploding at the same time.

Era como muitas bombas explodindo ao mesmo tempo.

"But why did it come here?"

Mas por que veio parar aqui?

asked Masha.

"Space rocks fly everywhere," the man said.

"Most are very small.

This one was special because it was so big.

It was the biggest one to hit Earth in many, many years."

Masha learned that the explosion happened near the Tunguska River.

People around the world felt the ground shake.

Some people far away saw bright lights in the sky for days.

From that day, Masha always remembered the morning when fire fell from the sky.
