Il y a longtemps, vivait une araignée rusée nommée Anansi.

Long ago, there lived a clever spider named Anansi.

Il était très intelligent mais se mettait parfois dans le pétrin.

He was very smart but sometimes got into trouble.

Un jour, Anansi vit des nuages sombres dans le ciel.

One day, Anansi saw dark clouds in the sky.

Il entendit un tonnerre puissant.

He heard loud thunder.

Le Dieu du Tonnerre était de nouveau en colère.

The Thunder God was angry again.

Quand le Dieu du Tonnerre était en colère, aucune pluie ne tombait.

When the Thunder God was angry, no rain fell.

Les plantes moururent.

The plants died.

Les animaux n'avaient pas d'eau.

The animals had no water.

Anansi voulait aider ses amis.

Anansi wanted to help his friends.

Il décida de rendre visite au Dieu du Tonnerre dans le ciel.

He decided to visit the Thunder God in the sky.

Anansi grimpa très haut le long de sa toile.

Anansi climbed up his web very high.

Il grimpa et grimpa jusqu'à ce qu'il atteigne les nuages.

He climbed and climbed until he reached the clouds.

Dieu du Tonnerre,

"Thunder God,"

dit Anansi.

"Why are you so angry?"

"What if I help people remember you?"

« Enverras-tu encore la pluie ? »

"Will you send rain again?"

« Oui »,

"Yes,"

dit le Dieu du Tonnerre.

« Mais d'abord, tu dois réussir une épreuve. »

"But first, you must pass a test."

« Apportez-moi le plus beau son du monde. »

"Bring me the most beautiful sound in the world."

Anansi retourna sur terre.

Anansi went back to earth.

Il écouta de nombreux sons.

He listened to many sounds.

Il entendit les oiseaux chanter.

He heard birds singing.

Il entendit des enfants rire.

He heard children laughing.

Il entendit le vent dans les arbres.

He heard the wind in the trees.

Mais quel son était le plus beau ?

But which sound was the most beautiful?

Alors Anansi eut une idée.

Then Anansi had an idea.

Il rassembla tous les gens.

He gathered all the people together.

Il leur parla du Dieu du Tonnerre.

He told them about the Thunder God.

Il leur demanda de chanter ensemble pour remercier le Dieu du Tonnerre de la pluie.

He asked them to sing together to thank the Thunder God for rain.

Tout le peuple chanta.

All the people sang.

Leurs voix se joignirent en un seul et magnifique chant.

Their voices joined together in one beautiful song.

Le chant s'éleva vers le ciel.

The song rose up to the sky.

Le Dieu du Tonnerre entendit le chant.

The Thunder God heard the song.

Il sourit.

He smiled.

« C'est le plus beau des sons, »

"This is the most beautiful sound,"

dit-il.

« Ce sont des gens qui sont reconnaissants. »

"It is people being grateful."

Le Dieu du Tonnerre envoya la pluie sur la terre.

The Thunder God sent rain to the earth.

Les plantes reverdirent.

The plants grew green again.

Les animaux trouvèrent de l'eau à boire.

The animals found water to drink.

À partir de ce jour, les gens se souvinrent toujours de remercier le Dieu du Tonnerre pour la pluie.

From that day, people always remembered to thank the Thunder God for rain.

Et Anansi apprit que rassembler les gens était mieux qu'être malin tout seul.

And Anansi learned that bringing people together was better than being clever alone.
