Anansi saw a big river.

No rio, ele viu muitos lagostins gordos nadando.

In the river, he saw many fat crayfish swimming.

A boca começou a se lhe encher de água.

His mouth started to water.

"Esses lagostins parecem tão bons!"

"Those crayfish look so good!"

disse ele.

Mas Anansi não sabia nadar.

But Anansi could not swim.

Ele tinha medo da água.

He was afraid of the water.

Ele se sentou à beira do rio e pensou profundamente.

He sat by the river and thought hard.

"Como posso pegar esses caranguejos de rio?"

"How can I catch those crayfish?"

perguntou-se a si mesmo.

Então Anansi teve uma ideia.

Then Anansi had an idea.

Ele era muito esperto, mas também muito ganancioso.

He was very clever, but also very greedy.

Ele correu para casa e pegou uma corda grossa.

He ran home and got a big rope.

Ele amarrou uma das pontas da corda em volta de sua perna.

He tied one end of the rope around his leg.

Ele amarrou a outra extremidade numa árvore perto do rio.

He tied the other end to a tree near the river.

"Agora posso entrar na água,"

"Now I can go into the water,"

disse Anansi.

Anansi said.

"Se eu me meter em encrenca, a corda me puxará de volta para a terra."

"If I get in trouble, the rope will pull me back to land."

Anansi entrou no rio lentamente.

Anansi walked into the river slowly.

A água estava fria.

The water was cold.

He reached for the crayfish with his long spider legs.

O lagostim parecia fácil de capturar.

The crayfish looked easy to catch.

They swam away from Anansi quickly.

Anansi tentou agarrá-los, mas eles escaparam todas as vezes.

Anansi tried to grab them, but they escaped every time.

Anansi ficou irritado.

Anansi got angry.

Ele desejava muito aqueles caranguejos.

He wanted those crayfish very much.

Ele adentrou mais fundo na água.

He went deeper into the water.

Ele esqueceu de ser cauteloso.

He forgot about being careful.

Ele esqueceu-se do perigo.

He forgot about the danger.

A água ficou cada vez mais profunda.

The water got deeper and deeper.

Logo, Anansi não conseguia mais tocar o fundo do rio.

Soon, Anansi could not touch the bottom of the river.

Ele começou a entrar em pânico.

He started to panic.

Socorro!

"Help!"

"Socorro!"

"Help!"

gritou ele.

Anansi tentou nadar de volta, mas ele não era um bom nadador.

Anansi tried to swim back, but he was not a good swimmer.

A corda ao redor de sua perna estava muito frouxa.

The rope around his leg was too loose.

A correnteza estava forte.

The current was strong.

It pushed him away from the shore.

Naquele momento, uma velha tartaruga sábia passou nadando.

A tartaruga balançou a cabeça.

"Você foi ganancioso, Anansi."

"You were greedy, Anansi."

"Você queria algo que não era destinado a você."

"You wanted something that was not meant for you."

"As aranhas pertencem à terra, não à água."

"Spiders belong on land, not in water."

A tartaruga bondosa ajudou Anansi a voltar para a margem.

The kind turtle helped Anansi get back to shore.

Anansi estava molhado e com frio.

Anansi was wet and cold.

Ele não tinha lagostins.

He had no crayfish.

Ele ainda estava com fome.

He was still hungry.

"Obrigado, tartaruga,"

"Thank you, turtle,"

disse Anansi.

said Anansi.

"Aprendi algo hoje."

"I learned something today."

"O que você aprendeu?"

"What did you learn?"

perguntou a tartaruga.

asked the turtle.

"Aprendi que ser ganancioso pode ser perigoso,"

"I learned that being greedy can be dangerous,"

disse Anansi.

Anansi said.

"Eu deveria estar contente com o que tenho."

"I should be happy with what I have."

"Eu não deveria tentar tomar coisas que não são para mim."

"I should not try to take things that are not for me."

A partir daquele dia, Anansi manteve-se longe do rio.

From that day on, Anansi stayed away from the river.

Ele encontrou comida na terra, onde as aranhas pertencem.

He found food on land, where spiders belong.

Ele não era tão ganancioso quanto antes.

He was not as greedy as before.

Às vezes ele ainda desejava coisas que não podia ter, mas se lembrava da lição do rio.

Sometimes he still wanted things he could not have, but he remembered the lesson from the river.

E o caranguejo-de-rio?

And the crayfish?

Eles ainda nadam felizes no rio, protegidos das aranhas gananciosas.

They still swim happily in the river, safe from greedy spiders.
