disse Anansi.

"But I don't want to work for them."

Anansi teve uma ideia astuta.

Anansi had a clever idea.

Ele foi à aldeia e disse a todos,

He went to the village and told everyone,

"Agora sou dono de todas as colinas de inhame."

"I own all the yam hills now."

"Ninguém pode levar inhames sem me pagar."

"No one can take yams without paying me."

As pessoas ficaram surpresas.

The people were surprised.

"Mas nós plantamos estes inhames,"

"But we planted these yams,"

disseram eles.

"We worked hard to grow them."

Soon, Anansi became rich.

But the Sky God was watching.

Ele viu o que Anansi estava fazendo.

He saw what Anansi was doing.

Uma manhã, Anansi acordou e foi para suas colinas de inhame.

One morning, Anansi woke up and went to his yam hills.

Mas algo estava errado.

But something was wrong.

Todos os inhames tinham desaparecido!

All the yams were gone!

As colinas estavam vazias.

The hills were empty.

"Onde estão os meus inhames?"

"Where are my yams?"

gritou Anansi. Uma voz veio do céu.

cried Anansi. A voice came from the sky.

Era o Deus do Céu.

It was the Sky God.

"Anansi, você não plantou estes inhames."

"Anansi, you did not plant these yams."

"Tu não as regaste."

"You did not water them."

"Tu não trabalhaste por elas."

"You did not work for them."

"Então eles não são seus."

"So they are not yours."

"Mas eu fui tão esperto!"

"But I was so clever!"

disse Anansi.

said Anansi.

"Ser esperto é bom,"

"Being clever is good,"

disse o Deus do Céu.

said the Sky God.

"Mas usar sua esperteza para enganar outros é errado."

"But using your cleverness to cheat others is wrong."

"Os inhames voltaram para as pessoas que realmente trabalharam por eles."

"The yams have gone back to the people who really worked for them."

Anansi aprendeu naquele dia que a esperteza sem trabalho árduo e honestidade não traz nada de bom.

Anansi learned that day that cleverness without hard work and honesty brings nothing good.

A partir daquele dia, Anansi teve que trabalhar por sua própria comida como todos os outros.

From that day on, Anansi had to work for his own food like everyone else.
