Il ne voulait que garder son or.

He only wanted to keep his gold.

Le vieil homme avait peur que quelqu'un lui vole son or.

The old man was afraid someone would steal his gold.

Alors il creusa un trou dans son jardin.

So he dug a hole in his garden.

Il mit toutes ses pièces d'or dans le trou.

He put all his gold coins in the hole.

Puis il la recouvrit de terre.

Then he covered it with dirt.

Chaque jour, il se rendait au trou.

Every day, he went to the hole.

Il déterrait son or et le comptait.

He dug up his gold and counted it.

Puis il le remit dans le trou.

Then he put it back in the hole.

Un jour, un voleur vit le vieil homme.

One day, a thief saw the old man.

Le voleur le regarda déterrer l'or.

The thief watched him dig up the gold.

Le voleur attendit jusqu'à la nuit.

The thief waited until night.

Puis il se rendit au jardin.

Then he went to the garden.

Il déterra toutes les pièces d'or et les emporta.

He dug up all the gold coins and took them away.

Le lendemain, le vieil homme se rendit dans son jardin.

The next day, the old man went to his garden.

Il creusa dans le trou, mais son or avait disparu !

He dug in the hole, but his gold was gone!

Il pleura et pleura.

He cried and cried.

Son voisin l'entendit pleurer.

His neighbor heard him crying.

« Qu'est-ce qui ne va pas ? »

"What is wrong?"

demanda le voisin.

asked the neighbor.

« On a volé mon or ! »

"Someone stole my gold!"

dit le vieil homme.

said the old man.

« As-tu utilisé l'or pour acheter des choses ? »

"Did you use the gold to buy things?"

demanda le voisin.

asked the neighbor.

« Non, jamais ! »

"No, never!"

"Je ne faisais que la regarder chaque jour,"

"I just looked at it every day,"

dit le vieil homme.

said the old man.

Le voisin ramassa une pierre.

The neighbor picked up a stone.

Il la mit dans le trou.

He put it in the hole.

"Here,"

dit-il.

he said.

« Cette pierre est la même chose que votre or. »

"This stone is the same as your gold."

Tu n'as jamais dépensé l'or, alors cette pierre fera tout aussi bien l'affaire.

"You never spent the gold, so this stone will work just as well."
